Nokomis' Nolan Herpstreith wins the SJ-R's athlete of the week poll

Nokomis' Nolan Herpstreith won The State Journal-Register's athlete of the week poll.

He won first place with 42% of the vote, or a total of 3,114. Fellow Nokomis freshman Mackenzie Mehochko was second with 2,683 and Rochester's Landon Kutscher was third with 410.

The poll closed at noon on Friday. Information about the nominees is below. Athens' Camren Bigard won last week's poll.

Cam Appenzeller, Chatham Glenwood, boys golf

The junior shot a 1-under-par 70 and led Chatham Glenwood to a team win in the Central State Eight Conference meet at Weibring Golf Club on Wednesday. Appenzeller was the lone golfer to finish under par. The Titans also won the Sangamon County tournament title on Saturday, including Appenzeller's 77.

Nolan Herpstreith, Nokomis, football

The sophomore running back racked up 253 yards on 21 carries and scored three touchdowns as Nokomis routed Oakland Tri-County 42-0 in a Lincoln Prairie Conference game. Herpstreith had TD runs of 10, 9 and 11 yards.

Leo Keebler, Williamsville, boys golf

The senior shot an even-par 72 to lead Williamsville to the Sangamo Conference championship on Wednesday at The Rail Golf Course. Keebler was challenged for medalist honors by teammate Will Seman, who finished with a 2-over 74.

Landon Kutscher, Rochester, boys soccer

The junior chalked up two goals and Rochester rolled to a 3-0 Central State Eight Conference victory over Sacred Heart-Griffin on Tuesday. Kutscher opened with a goal on a Brenden McArdle assist in the first half before dialing up another goal unassisted after the break. On Saturday, he scored the only goal on a penalty kick in the second half in a 1-0 in a nonconference win over Quincy.

Mason Lyttaker, Williamsville, football

The senior receiver pulled down a 20-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Josh Cates as time expired in regulation before the Class 3A No. 9 Bullets nicked 2A No. 4 Athens 36-35 in overtime. He also had a similar 20-yard TD grab in the first quarter on fourth-and-6 and finished with five receptions for 63 yards and two scores. He won the SJ-R's weekly poll in Week 2.

Mackenzie Mehochko, Nokomis, volleyball

The freshman hitter contributed 10 kills, 13 digs and four aces in a 23-25, 25-21, 25-16 MSM Conference win over Lutheran on Tuesday.

Macie Rolf, Sacred Heart-Griffin, volleyball

Junior hitter Macie Rolf led the Cyclones with 10 kills and 12 digs in a 25-20, 25-20 victory over Springfield High for the City tournament title at Herb Scheffler Gymnasium on Thursday. It was the program's 36th City title.
