Christian McCaffrey became the first player since 2005 to run, catch and throw a touchdown in the same game

Christian McCaffrey just did something only four other players have accomplished in modern NFL history.

The San Francisco 49ers running back ran, caught and passed for a touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 8. The last player to do that was running back LaDanian Tomlinson for the then-San Diego Chargers in 2005. New England Patriots wideout David Patten and Chicago Bears Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton also completed the feat. Seven others did it as well, though all were before the 1970 NFL-AFL merger, per StatMuse.

Oddly enough, McCaffrey's first touchdown was the passing score. On a pitch from 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, McCaffrey lofted a nice throw up to receiver Brandon Aiyuk for a 34-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Then, in the third quarter, McCaffrey hauled in a 9-yard pass from Garoppolo.

Minutes later in the fourth, McCaffrey would complete the rare single-game triple crown on a 1-yard score.

McCaffrey only joined the 49ers 10 days ago after being traded for a bevy of draft picks from the Carolina Panthers, but he's proving to be quite the offensive asset for Kyle Shanahan's offense. McCaffrey has been featured prominently in his second game with the team and is looking every bit like the player the 49ers have been looking for in recent years.
