Child with lighter accidentally caused fire at house of Dolphins' Tyreek Hill

SOUTHWEST RANCHES — The Davie Fire Department has determined that the fire at Tyreek Hill’s house was caused by a child playing with a lighter, fire marshal Robert Taylor said Thursday.

Hill, the Dolphins’ Pro Bowl receiver, left practice Wednesday afternoon to tend to his house in western Broward County. By then, about 20 units from Davie Fire Rescue and the Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue divisions had responded to the two-alarm call.

“There was significant damage to the roof in the area where the fire originated,” Taylor said, adding that the damage was extensive enough that “it probably is going to need some work” before it’s safe to inhabit. But that’s up to Hill because the fire department released the house back to him Wednesday afternoon.

“My guess is that he will be back (in the house) at some point,” Drew Rosenhaus, Hill’s agent, said Wednesday. “Maybe not today, maybe tomorrow. We just have to allow people to do their job.”

No people or pets were injured in the blaze. Taylor said everyone who had been inside the home was already outside when units began arriving.

Rosenhaus said the fire was contained within one room.

“He and his family are handling it with as much poise as you could hope,” Rosenhaus said. “He was very grateful to the firefighters and everyone that did indeed save his home.”

Video shot from a helicopter by Miami’s WSVN-Channel 7 showed massive smoke billowing from the roof. Hill, in a walking boot, was seen outside the home with relatives.

Later, Hill spotted a reporter while driving out of his gated community. He lowered his window, smiled and said; “Go home, man. Everybody’s good, dawg.”

Property records show the house was bought in 2022 for $6.9 million.
