Cheboygan girls win fourth game in five; Onaway boys, Mackinaw City girls also victorious

PICKFORD – A big third quarter from Addy Baldwin helped lift the Cheboygan girls basketball team to a 31-28 victory at Pickford on Monday.

Baldwin nailed three 3-point baskets in the third and finished with a team-high 11 points to lead the Chiefs (6-8), who earned their fourth win in five games.

“It was another nail-biter again,” Cheboygan coach Walter Hanson said. “We had to come back from behind late in the game. Once again, we battled back and maintained a small lead. (Addy) Baldwin hit some huge threes to push us over the top. We struggled offensively to get points, but it’s nice to have a team when any one player has the ability to have a great night and lift the team.”

ONAWAY – Despite being without a few key players, the Onaway boys basketball team still delivered a solid offensive performance in a 91-80 victory over Brimley at home on Monday.

“I’m really happy with the way we played offensively,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said of his Cardinals, who took a 46-32 lead into halftime. “We had a little lull in the second quarter, but we moved the ball great. We’re playing good basketball, but we have to play better defense. We can’t be giving up 80 points."

Jadin Mix scored 27 points to lead the Cardinals (12-4), who received 25 from Austin Veal. Mason Beebe and Luke Lovelace netted 12 points apiece, Jackson Chaskey had nine, and Cooper VanHuysen finished with four.

“Cooper VanHuysen, for being a freshman, gave us solid minutes,” Szymoniak said. “We’re really trying to build more depth for a late season run. We’ve had some guys doing a nice job off the bench.”

Mackinaw City girls hold off scrappy Mackinac Island

MACKINAW CITY – The Mackinaw City girls basketball team moved to 14-0 on Monday night.

But it was far from easy.

The Comets got all they could handle from Mackinac Island despite claiming a 43-36 home victory.

“The Lady Lakers are an up-and-coming team with only one senior on the roster,” Mackinaw City coach Jake Huffman said. “They have some nice ball players. Tonight's game was a physical battle and one in which both teams contested shots and fought for loose balls and rebounds. This was a great game for us to pick up against a potential district opponent.”

Jersey Beauchamp led the Comets with 16 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Gracie Beauchamp recorded a double-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals, five assists and two blocks, Kerry-Ann Ming had six points and seven rebounds, Rian Esper registered four points and five rebounds, Kenzlie Currie added three points, seven rebounds and two steals, and Grace Sroka chipped in with one point and four rebounds.

“These ladies continue to impress me every night on how much they are willing to sacrifice and put forth in their effort,” Huffman said. “They are playing great team basketball, assisting on a high percentage of shots and playing basketball with great discipline.”

NMCA boys drop road contest at Harbor Light

HARBOR SPRINGS – It was a difficult night for the Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy boys basketball team, which suffered an 83-35 loss at Harbor Light on Monday.

“We started off slow and simply gave up too many turnovers,” NMCA coach James Brabson said. “Games like this are a good test of our heart as a team and shows some of our young guys the level of effort that it takes to play at a varsity level. (Harbor Light) has a good team this year with size, and experience with all their seniors, they definitely have a team that’s going to be tough come district time.”

Josiah Brabson finished with 16 points and four rebounds to lead the Eagles (6-10, 3-6 Northern Lakes Conference). Josh Ferraiuolo had 11 points and four rebounds and Zack Schepperly added four points and three rebounds.
