Charlevoix sweeps in Hastings, Boyne City goes 2-1 in hosted tourney

HASTINGS — Charlevoix baseball overcame a tough week of getting games in by heading south Saturday and picked up a couple of wins in the process.

Visiting Hastings in a doubleheader, the Rayders collected victories of 12-2 and 14-1 to move to 8-1-1 overall on the season.

Bryce Johnson picked up the victory across three innings in game one, striking out seven, while allowing two hits and three walks. Emmett Bergmann also went three innings in relief and struck out seven, giving up just two hits as well.

Ryan Pearl singled and doubled and drove in a run, Patrick Sterrett had a triple and an RBI, Owen Waha doubled and Troy Nickel, AJ Speigl and Johnson also all drove in a run.

In game two, Waha didn’t allow a hit across two innings to earn the victory, while also striking out four, then Hunter Lemerand went three innings and kept it going.

Lemerand didn’t allow a hit and struck out three to complete the five-inning combined no-hitter. The two did allow a combined five walks.

Waha also tripled, singled and had two RBIs, Jack Jarema went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Nickel and Pearl each singled, doubled and drove in two, Dylan Clapp doubled in two runs and Lemerand had an RBI single.

The Rayders next welcome in Charlevoix on Thursday, April 27.

Boyne City Invite 

BOYNE CITY — The Boyne City baseball team earned a 2-1 day in its hosted Boyne City Invitational over the weekend, beating both Rudyard and Ogemaw Heights.

The Ramblers earned a 7-3 win over Rudyard, fell to Alpena in a 13-1 game, then sent the Falcons home with a 1-0 defeat. All three games came as four-inning matchups.

Against Rudyard, Gavin Hewitt homered, while Will Brown and Jack Paquette each added an RBI.

Kacey Gray earned the win with three strikeouts and five hits allowed.

The Ramblers collected just two hits agains Alpena, with both Mason Wilcox and Conner Rajkovich singling.

Against Ogemaw, Boyne City had Wilcox earn the win on the mound with four strikeouts and one hit allowed over four innings, along with four walks.

Hewitt and Paquette both singled at the plate in the low scoring matchup.

Boyne City moved to 2-5 overall and will next meet Gaylord St. Mary on Wednesday, April 26 at home.

East Jordan at Ellsworth 

ELLSWORTH — East Jordan improved to 8-0 on the season with a sweep over Ellsworth late last week, winning games of 7-0 and 18-2 over the Lancers.

“We really had a solid night all around tonight,” East Jordan coach Tom Reid said. “Our pitching remained solid, defensively we were good, and the bats came to life in game two to the tune of 14 hits.  We are off to an 8-0 start but I still feel our bats aren’t producing as we were expecting.  There was a glimpse tonight in game two.  If we can get that consistent, this season might be one to remember.”

Korbyn Russell earned the five-inning victory with 13 strikeouts and two walks and a single allowed.

Devon Olstrom drove in two runs off three singles and Brendan Aenis doubled. Steven Anderson also had a two-run single and Ben Reid drove in a run.

In game two, Dawson Carey struck out 10 and earned the win with three hits and two walks allowed.

Carey also homered and singled twice at the plate, Ethan Thomas had three singles and two RBIs, Aenis added two more RBIs on a pair of singles and Reid had a two-run double. Olstrom also had an RBI double.

East Jordan will welcome in Petoskey for a makeup double on Wednesday, April 26.

Mackinaw City at Bulldog Tourney

RAVENNA — The Mackinaw City baseball team took on some tough teams in a Ravenna hosted Bulldog Tournament over the weekend and made their way to the championship game.

The Comets earned a 3-1 win over Shelby to reach the finals, then dropped a 2-1 game against Ravenna in the championship.

Lars Huffman improved to 5-0 on the mound this season with a win vs. Shelby, which came with two strikeouts.

Huffman also went 2 for 2 at the plate with two runs and Nike Vieau drove in a pair of runs.

Against Ravenna, Sebastian Pierce pitched over three innings and struck out two, while Braylon Currie took the loss across three innings.

Vieau drove in another run at the plate and Trystan Swanson scored the lone run for the Comets.

The day moved Mackinaw to 7-3 overall on the season.

Harbor Light at Boyne Falls 

BOYNE FALLS — The Harbor Light baseball team picked up a pair of Northern Lakes wins over Boyne Falls late last week, winning games of 21-0 and 15-0.

In the opener, Will Paulus earned the pitching win, striking out seven over three innings, while allowing one hit.

Daniel Keefe went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, Derk Boerman singled twice, drove in two and scored three and Caleb Ogden had an RBI and four steals.

In game two, the win went to Boerman across three innings of work. He also struck out seven and didn’t allow a hit or walk.

Case Bradford drove in two runs, Corin Paulus went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Ogden stole four more bases and added an RBI.
