The NC State men aren’t the only basketball program at the school making some noise this March.

As the Wolfpack men’s team was defeating 2 seed Marquette in the Sweet 16 of the 2024 NCAA Tournament Friday, its women’s team was putting together a similarly impressive feat: Knocking off 2 seed Stanford in the Sweet 16 of the women’s tournament.

With Tara VanDerveer and the Cardinal behind it, NC State is onto the Elite Eight, where it will square off against 1 seed Texas in Portland, Oregon.

The Wolfpack earned its biggest victory of the season Friday, coming back from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Stanford and star forward Cameron Brink 77-67. The triumph was propelled by a third quarter in which NC State outscored the Cardinal 28-10. With the victory, the Wolfpack improved to 30-6 on the season, marking just the second season in program history with at least 30 wins (both of which have come in the past three seasons).

With one top challenger toppled, another looms ahead. Texas, the region’s top seed, comes into the clash with NC State with a 33-4 record and victories in 15 of its past 16 games. The Longhorns have rolled through the NCAA Tournament to this point, winning their first three games by a combined 73 points, with each victory decided by at least 11 points.
