What channel is Michigan State vs. Wisconsin on today? Time, TV schedule for game
It took until Jan. 21, but Michigan State basketball finally got its first true road win of the season in a tough battle on Sunday with Maryland. Can the Spartans make it two in a row?
That will be the question they will try and answer Friday night when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin looking to redeem an early-season loss to the Badgers.
If you had to describe MSU's season so far, the word "slog" may come to mind. Not much has been easy. Untimely injuries, dreadful shooting stretches, poor finishes, and bad starts, the Spartans have covered them all. But no one watching this team could say it's untalented, for it's certainly not that. The Spartans have veteran guards, led by Tyson Walker, who is on track to average the most points per game ever on a Tom Izzo team. That's not insignificant. Jaden Akins and A.J. Hoggard are talented veterans who are capable of excelling on both sides of the floor. Not to mention fifth-year senior power forward Malik Hall and a talented cast of freshmen.
But what they've lacked for much of the season is an identity. When things have gotten tough, the default has far too often been "pass it to Tyson Walker, he'll figure it out." A lot of the time, he does. But it's also gotten the Spartans in trouble, causing the offense to bog down for long stretches.
LESSON LEARNED: Michigan State basketball finally learning that early bird does get the worm, and the win
But over the last few weeks in which the Spartans have won three in a row, they've started to figure out who they are. A tough team that creates turnovers, gets out to run, and when push comes to shove at the end of the game, they'll make the big plays. You started to see it in the Rutgers game, as the Spartans turned on the jets in the second half and ran away with a too-close-for-comfort game. It was a similar story against a tough Minnesota team, with Walker closing out the Gophers down the stretch. And it was perhaps best personified by a defensive play made by sophomore Tre Holloman in the waning seconds against Maryland, poking the ball away from Terrapins guard Jahmir Young, ending the game when there was a real chance they could lose.
Will the Spartans be able to build on that against a Wisconsin team that physically beat them up in the last matchup? We'll see what adjustments Izzo and his staff make as the Spartans try to maintain their climb up the Big Ten standings.
