Celtics injury update: Luke Kornet ‘back at practice today participating in non-contact drills’

The Boston Celtics have been leaning heavily on their big man camp invitees to get through their four preseason exhibition games. That is probably not a bad thing given the team’s need to shore up its frontcourt rotation in the wake of injuries to key bigs.

With starting center Robert Williams III likely out until sometime in December and veteran swingman Danilo Gallinari a scratch for the regular season or longer, news that injured big man Luke Kornet was back in practice on Sunday per interim head coach Joe Mazzulla was a relief.

Kornet is expected to have first crack at covering for Timelord and Gallinari’s absence, so when he sprained his ankle in training camp, it was the team’s impetus to sign veteran big man Blake Griffin for additional depth.

The former Vanderbilt player could conceivably return as soon as Friday’s final preseason tilt against the Toronto Raptors on Friday, but he should be on a timetable to return for Boston’s season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers on the 18th.
