New Castle Twerps set for championship action
Nov. 3—The New Castle Twerps are set to play for a championship on Saturday.
New Castle will take on Blackhawk at 1 p.m. at Freedom High School in the Beaver County Youth Football League championship. This is the second consecutive year New Castle has made it to the championship game.
"We have a lot of new kids. We have maybe 39 players; only about 11 of them are returning players from last year's team," New Castle coach Jason Allen said. "They caught on to us coaches very fast. They learn very fast."
The Twerps' conference age range is from kindergarten to second grade. Last season, New Castle won the championship after defeating Brighton Township, 20-14, to end the season undefeated. New Castle's regular season ended at 7-1 and they won two other games to advance to the championship.
"We started out the season with our first game against Beaver Falls and we lost to them, 30-20, and we haven't lost a game since," Allen said. "They didn't like that feeling of losing because we went the whole year before without losing. They worked hard all week, every week, and now we're in the championship game."
Allen said he attended a Blackhawk game and said, "They're a solid team. They're very good; they're well coached," adding, "They don't make many mistakes as far as missing tackles or blocks. They're not going to just let us win. They're going to come out and play tough. It's definitely going to be a good game."
