Carl Nassib partnering with Trevor Project for Pride Month
Former Penn State defensive lineman Carl Nassib is using his platform as the NFL’s first openly gay player to raise of suicide prevention through a new financial partnership with The Trevor Project. In honor of Pride Month, Nassib is matching all donations to The Trevor Project up to $100,000.
The Trevor Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting LGBTQ youth with the mental struggles that lead some to be afraid to embrace their true self and contemplate suicide. According to a 2022 survey, 45% of LGBTQ youth had suicidal thoughts in the past year. The Trevor Project hopes to help those with suicidal thoughts through these difficult moments.
Nassib announced his donation matching effort with a post on his Instagram account on Sunday morning.
“I also want to remind people why pride is important to me,” Nassib said in his video post. “Out there right now there is a kid saying ‘I’d rather be dead than gay,’ and that’s why I’m partnering again with The Trevor Project and matching all donations up to $100,000.”

It was just over a year ago when Nassib announced to the world he is gay, thus making him the first openly gay player in NFL history. Nassib paired his coming out publicly with a $100,000 donation to The Trevor Project.
Nassib is coming off his sixth season in the NFL. Last year with the Las Vegas Raiders, Nassib appeared in 13 games and recorded 21 tackles with 1.5 sacks and three tackles for loss.
Nassib was a unanimous All-American and winner of the Lombardi Award and Lott Trophy in 2015, in addition being named First-team All-Big Ten. Nassib went on to be a third-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 NFL draft. After two seasons with the Browns, Nassib was waived prior to the start of the 2018 season. He then spent two years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and eventually signed a three-year contract with the Raiders in 2020.
Nassib was released by the Raiders in March of this year and remains a free agent.
