Parkway, Haughton, Huntington and Benton among Week 1 football winners
Parkway’s Antonio Gladney rushed 22 times for 272 yards and three TDs as the Panthers escaped a tight battle with Minden 43-41.
Aeron Burrell was good on a field goal, CJ Dudley had two TDs and Brady Pine added a fumble recovery for a score for Parkway (1-0). Minden's Jakobe Jackson had a night to remember picking up two rushing TDs and two receiving TDs from Hudson Brown.
Haughton 48, Red River 28: Haughton’s Christian Turner ran for three scores and Davontay Moss added two more for the Bucs (1-0). JP Cormier added a TD and Jakob Handy had 17 tackles for Haughton.
Benton 28, Northwood 26: Benton (1-0) had four touchdowns from Greg Manning to edge Northwood (0-1). Desmond Harris scored twice for the Falcons, and Hutson Hearron tossed TD passes to Harris and Tucker McCabe.
Huntington 38 Mansfield 26: Quarterback LJ White tossed two TD passes each to Kaleb Tucker and Jamarion Washington as the Raiders (1-0) picked up the win.
Natchitoches Central 39, Woodlawn 28: Woodlawn's Isaiah Kennedy threw TD passes to Brandon Henderson and Joshua Dotson and scored on the ground, but it wasn’t enough against NCHS (1-0).
Pleasant Grove 27, Byrd 10: The Jackets couldn’t repeat last year’s dominating performance against Pleasant Grove and lost on the road.
Calvary 47, Logansport 12: Abram Wardell completed 22 of 27 passes for 356 yards and three TDs for the Cavs. James Simon rushed 15 times for 142 yards and a score, while Aubrey Hermes caught eight passes for 168 yards. Logansport's Stevie Holloway connected with D'War'Tez Chatman, who also had a rushing TD.
Haynesville 29, North Webster 13: Haynesville (1-0) got TDs from Alonzo Jackson Jr., Donnie Critton, Isaiah Washington and Byruss Burns. North Webster's Christian Whitlock connected with Jakobe Lawson for a touchdown and Braylon Richardson took a scoop and score for the Purple Knights.
Glenbrook 22, Cedar Creek 18: Glenbrook junior quarterback Easton Sanders threw touchdowns to Landry Powell and Jackson Waller to get the win. Chase Sentell also scored for Glenbrook (1-0).
Arcadia 27, Lakeside 14: The Hornets (1-0) topped Lakeside (0-1) thanks to two scores by Tray Jackson. He hit Omarion Carr for a 30-yard score and ran one in. Lakeside (0-1) had TDs from Jordan Case and Tamarjah Ferrell.
Sam Houston 47, Many 10: Defending Division III state champion Many (0-1) managed one TD from Jeremiah James in losing their season opener to the Broncos (1-0).
St. Mary's 21, Abbeville 18: Mixon Bankston had a big night for the St. Mary's Tigers (1-0) scoring three touchdowns in the win over Abbeville. Bankston also snagged two interceptions on defense.
Pineville 20, Winnfield 14: Winnfield (1-0) came up short on the road at 5A Pineville. The Tigers’ Damascus Lewis threw TD passes to Ryan Davis and Braylan Starks in the loss.
Wossman 42, BTW 0: Wossman started the season by blanking the BTW Lions (0-1) in Monroe.
Lake Charles Prep 75, Magnolia Charter 0: “We learned some great lessons about adversity and how to handle it,” Magnolia coach Anthony Johnson said. “I was disappointed we didn’t play up to our potential.”
Thursday games
Captain Shreve 37, Loyola 7: Shreve’s Jamarlon Otis rushed for a school record 313 yards on 21 carries with three touchdowns to help the Gators get past Loyola in a turnover-filled game at Independence Stadium. The teams committed four turnovers each in the season opener, but Shreve (1-0) used its depth to get the win.
Loyola (0-1) was led by Bryce Restovich, who completed 14 of 22 passes for 192 yards and the lone TD. His offense generated 332 yards against the Shreve defense.
Neville 30, Evangel 29 OT: The Eagles (0-1) had a chance to knock off the Tigers (1-0) in the road contest, but an attempted two-point conversion run on the final play in overtime came up inches short.
Neville had trouble with the Evangel combo of Peyton and Parker Fulghum. Peyton completed 24 of 34 passes for 340 yards and four TDs with one interception. Parker caught 11 of the passes for 236 yards and three scores. The Eagles posted 416 total offensive yards.
Green Oaks 12, Southwood 6 OT: In another overtime game, the Giants (1-0) were able to outlast the Cowboys (0-1) in a thriller thanks to Tony Johnson's second interception of the game came in the extra period.
Giants' multi-tasker Delarrious Marshall scored on a 10-yard pass from Tovoras Lee in regulation, then Lee found Amarion Dorsey from 12 yards out on a fourth-and-12 in overtime.
Union Parish 28, Homer 21: The Farmers (1-0) found the winning touch against the Pelicans (0-1), who almost pulled off the road win. Homer's Zyan Warren completed 19 of 27 passes for 272 yards and two TDs, while Jamarquese Hampton caught eight of the throws for 129 yards.
