Cape Fear's most decorated tennis player, Anna Piland, makes college signing official

Cape Fear's most decorated tennis player has made it official.

Anna Piland signed her commitment letter to Caltech women's tennis in Pasadena, California, on Thursday at Cape Fear.

In her career as a Colt, Piland has achieved more than any other tennis player in program history — like being the only player in Cape Fear history to finish a season undefeated (39-0) throughout the regular season and playoffs as a sophomore to win her first of three 3A state championships.

Piland’s coach from her freshman to junior year, Chris Lucas had one word to describe Anna and her attitude towards the sport and her life: Perseverance.

After her remarkable sophomore season, Piland had surgery on her foot for a stress fracture that needed screws.

"It took a lot of physical therapy and a lot of perseverance helped me come back,” she said. “During my physical therapy, it was hard for me because I also had to strength train, but pushing myself and persevering for my teammates helped a lot.”

Piland rewrote the Colts history books, leading the program to its first NCHSAA title and graduating with a pair of dual-team championships and a 3A doubles state championship with Brooke Bieniek, and a milestone of 100 career wins.

Piland expressed her gratitude for all of the support and training she received over her tennis career.

"I'm extremely grateful for all of my family, friends, coaches, and supporters like the media; I couldn't have done it without your encouragement," she said.
