High school baseball power rankings: Calallen, Tuloso-Midway clash lead the way

District play is in the early stages in Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend and here are some takeaways as we look ahead to multiple tight races.

Early 31-4A showdown

On Friday, neighborhood rivals Calallen and Tuloso-Midway will meet in a game between teams with stellar records and solid teams to back up those records. The question is: Can the Warriors overcome the opponent being Calallen? Wins for T-M against its rival have been in short supply over the years, but the Warriors are confident and determined to take the team back to the state tournament after some near misses recently.

Is anybody in 29-5A state worthy?

It’s an interesting question because, through the course of the non-district and tournament season, no team in the area’s lone 5A district is showing a streak of dominance. Ray topped Veterans Memorial last week but then Victoria West stopped the Texans to open zone play, and Moody gave the Eagles all they could handle on Tuesday. Preseason prognosticators were pointing to Victoria East as a team to watch, and that may be the club everybody could be looking up to.

Short hops

• Beeville’s extra-inning win proved Sinton was mortal, but it might have awoken the Pirates in their quest to repeat as district champions.

• London christened its new turf with a 14-2 win against Hebbronville on Tuesday and is continuing to show they remain the favorite in a tough 30-3A.

• Refugio has started the season undefeated with a game against Port Aransas on the schedule this week and regional 2A power Kenedy in the future.

Here’s a look at this week’s rankings, and yes a dart board was used. Just kidding:
