What Ryan Day sees in Ohio State WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba

Jaxon Smith-Njigba did not have much of a chance to show what he could do in 2022.

After a record-breaking sophomore season with 95 catches and 1,606 receiving yards, Smith-Njigba spent the majority of 2022 sidelined with a hamstring injury.

But in his appearance on ESPN’s “College GameDay,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day reminded the hosts of what Smith-Njigba could do at the next level.

“I think it’s his change in direction,” Day said. “I call him like a point guard who goes down the court, but never really slows down to make a crossover. He can make a guy miss and continue to move full speed. I’ve never seen anybody cover him. He always seems to be open. I think his toughness, the way he’s built low to the ground, he can play inside and play outside.”

Many mock drafts have Smith-Njigba as the first wide receiver off the board.

How many NFL draft first-round picks has Ohio State had?

Ohio State has had more NFL first-round picks than any other team in college football.

Coming into the 2023 draft, the Buckeyes have had 87 first-round draft picks: four more than Southern California (83) and nine more than Alabama (76).

What Ohio State coach Ryan Day said about C.J. Stroud's S2 Cognition testing

In an interview on ESPN’s “College GameDay” Thursday, Ohio State coach Ryan Day said he had a Zoom call with officials that ran the S2 Cognition test hours before the NFL draft, asking about the reported scores of his quarterback C.J. Stroud.

“I learned quite a few things about it,” Day said on ESPN from Kansas City, the site of the draft. “First off, it's all based on your eye reaction and reaction to buttons and pressing buttons. So there's no IQ test. There's no question and answer. There's nothing like that.”

Day said he also learned that some of the test scores attributed to Stroud were inaccurate.

“There’s 10 scores that actually get evaluated during the testing process,” he said, “and you don't know what those scores mean. They're all evaluating different things. To just kind of take a number that got leaked and make an evaluation of somebody is a little irresponsible.”

C.J. Stroud and the S2 Cognition test: What we know

In the days leading up to the 2023 NFL draft, questions about C.J. Stroud’s football IQ and ability were put on full display.

Bob McGinn, a former Green Bay Packers beat writer for the Green Bay Press-Gazette and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reported the former Ohio State quarterback scored in the 18th percentile on his S2 Cognition test, testing his visual and instinctive learning, along with impulse control and observation while measuring how players process and make split-second decisions.

Multiple sources told McGinn that Young's total score was in the 98th percentile, while Fresno State's Jake Haener was at 96%, Levis and BYU's Jaren Hall finished at 93%, Houston's Clayton Tune finished at 84%, Richardson finished at 79 and Tennessee's Hendon Hooker was at 46%.

“I'm not a test taker. I play football," Stroud told Charlotte Observer columnist Scott Fowler. "At the end of the day, I don’t have nothing to prove to nobody. I’m not (going to) sit here and explain how I process football. The people who are making the picks know what I can do, so that’s all that matters to me.

"There’s a whole bunch of people who know how to coach better, know how to play quarterback better, know how to do everything on social media," Stroud continued. "But the man in the arena, that’s what tough is stepping into the arena 10 toes. And I’m going to stand on that. I know what I can do, I know what I can process. If I’m not the smartest quarterback in this draft, I know I’m one of the smartest quarterbacks in the NFL when I step in there tomorrow.

"I have confidence in myself. I don’t think you can play at Ohio State and not be smart. I don’t have nothing to prove to nobody man. At the end of the day, if you don’t trust and believe in me, I’ll tell you to watch this."

Where could C.J. Stroud, Paris Johnson Jr. or Jaxon Smith-Njigba could be selected in the 2023 NFL draft?

Thursday night, Ohio State is expected to have three first-round draft picks. And in ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.’s final mock draft, he has each of them off the board in the first 22 picks.

When is the first round of the 2023 NFL draft?
