Bucs to wear retro creamsicle uniforms vs. Detroit Lions

TAMPA ― For the love of Doug Williams and Lee Roy Selmon, the Bucs’ original uniforms are finally back.

The Bucs announced Monday that they will wear their creamsicle color scheme in a home game against the Detroit Lions on Oct. 15.

It will be the first time the Bucs have paid tribute to those inaugural uniforms since 2012. The Bucs changed to pewter, white and red uniforms shortly after the team was purchased by the Glazer family and debuted them in the 1997 season.

The throwback combination, which includes white helmets and the stiletto-chewing Bucco Bruce logo, took a hiatus when the NFL required players to wear the same helmet for the entire season.

The Lions were a rival of the Bucs in the old NFC Central division and thus a suitable opponent for the return of their orange and white uniforms.

The game will culminate a week of the organization paying homage to the creamsicles. In addition to the uniforms, the Bucs plan to transform Raymond James Stadium into Tampa Stadium, the team’s original venue known as the “Big Sombrero.” It will include retro field stencils, stadium bunting and video board assets.

The Bucs wore the original color scheme from 1976-1996 and once per year from 2009-12.

That included players such as Derrick Brooks, Warren Sapp, John Lynch and Ronde Barber — all in the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with Selmon — all the way to Josh Freeman and even Lavonte David.

“The return of our beloved Creamsicle uniforms for this special game is something that our fans have been passionate about for many years, and we are excited to celebrate the history of our franchise with a unique, dedicated Creamsicle gameday experience,” Bucs Chief Operating Officer Brian Ford said in a statement. “This is more than a throwback game. It is a celebration of our legacy and some of the great moments and players that make our story so special for our fans.”

The Bucs say they have individual game tickets and season passes available on sale at Buccaneers.com.
