Browns' Joe Thomas injures right arm, ironman plays streak ends

In Week 2 of this season, Cleveland Browns perennial Pro Bowler Joe Thomas hit a remarkable milestone: he played in his 10,000th consecutive play. Forget a consecutive games streak, Thomas had never missed so much as a snap heading into Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans.

But against the Titans, that streak ended. And Thomas’ season may have ended as well.

In the third quarter, Thomas was engaged with Tennessee’s Brian Orakpo and as the play was ending, Thomas immediately grabbed the back of his upper left arm, near his elbow. Injuries are never good, but seeing Thomas on the field, clearly in pain, is disconcerting. He’s been so good for so long, coming on the field for every snap even though he’s experienced only 48 wins in his career; each of his first 10 seasons ended with a Pro Bowl appearance, and he’s been named first- or second-team All-Pro eight times.

As Thomas left the field, Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan made a point to track the older player down to pay his respect.

Thomas’ streak ended at 10,363 snaps.

The Browns announced a triceps injury for Thomas, and he didn’t return, a game that ended with a 12-9 loss in overtime for Cleveland.

If the 33-year-old Thomas has a torn triceps, there’s a strong chance his season is over, which would end his consecutive-games streak at 167. And the Browns, who are still winless, will be without their best player.
