Brian Daboll discusses possibility of Giants adding receiver DeAndre Hopkins

Dec 25, 2022; Glendale, Arizona, USA; Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at State Farm Stadium.

Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, a five-time Pro Bowler, was officially released by the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday night, making him one of the biggest names available on the open market.

Could Big Blue come calling?

Head coach Brian Daboll was asked before Wednesday’s OTA session about the possibility of the Giants adding a player like Hopkins.

“Any time there’s someone that’s available as a free agent, I’d say Joe (Schoen) and his staff are going to look into it, research it,” Daboll said. “We talk about, really, a lot of different players. So regardless of who it is, that’s part of the job is to make sure that we’re doing our due diligence.”

The Giants added some wide receivers earlier this offseason in Parris Campbell, Jalin Hyatt, and Jamison Crowder, but they could still use a true No. 1 receiver for Daniel Jones.

Hopkins, 30, is coming off a season in which he played just nine games due to a suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy, but he still put up 717 receiving yards and three touchdowns. His track record speaks for itself, as he’s gone over the 1,100-yard mark six times and has 71 career touchdowns.

There are legitimate concerns around the league that Hopkins isn’t quite the same dominant receiver that he used to be, which is why the Cardinals cut him instead of paying his $19.45 million base salary for 2023, but if he’s still got something left in the tank, he could be an interesting option for a Giants team looking to take a step forward and contend for a Super Bowl.
