NY Giants hiring Carmen Bricillo to be their new offensive line coach

The New York Giants are hiring Carmen Bricillo to be their new offensive line coach, an individual with knowledge of the situation told NorthJersey.com on Thursday afternoon. The team has since confirmed the move to bring Bricillo on board after interviewing him the previous day.

In some ways, this will be the most critical addition this offseason to improving an offense that fell considerably short of expectations en route to the Giants' 6-11 record in Brian Daboll's second season.

Bobby Johnson was fired at season's end after two seasons, including the most recent campaign in which the Giants allowed an NFL-worst 85 sacks. The 47-year-old Bricillo comes to the Giants after spending two years with the Las Vegas Raiders, who allowed just 40 sacks this season in comparision.

Bricillo is the only known candidate who interviewed for a position Daboll must nail this offseason.

The Giants also requested an interview with Falcons offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford, but he is still under contract in Atlanta and they were denied - even though the Falcons are currently without a head coach.

Since position coaches are not subject to the NFL's Rooney Rule during the interview process, not every candidate teams speak with are made public.

Bricillo spent a year under the wing of iconic offensive line guru Dante Scarnecchia in New England and was one of two OL coaches hired to succeed him. With Bill Belichick now out in New England, might not be outrageous for Brian Daboll to also extend an invite to the retired Scarnecchia to stop by every once in a while.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen has selected four offensive linemen in his first two drafts, including No. 7 overall Evan Neal, who has not lived up to expectations. Bricillo will be tasked with developing talent, especially younger players who have yet to reach their potential on the roster (Neal, Joshua Ezeudu, Marcus McKethan) and a center in John Michael Schmitz who went through an up and down rookie season.
