Braves acquire Gausman, O'Day from O's for four prospects
The Atlanta Braves acquired right-handers Kevin Gausman and Darren O'Day from the Baltimore Orioles before Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline in exchange for four prospects and international bonus money, both teams announced.
The Orioles will receive right-hander Evan Phillips, corner infielder Jean Carlos Encarnacion, catcher Brett Cumberland and lefty Bruce Zimmerman. Baltimore will also receive $2.5 million in international bonus funds.
Gausman, 27, is 5-8 with a 4.43 ERA in 21 starts this season, posting 104 strikeouts against 32 walks in 124 innings. In six years with the Orioles, he is 39-51 with a 4.22 ERA.
He still has two more years of arbitration remaining after this year.
O'Day, 35, was moved to the 60-day disabled list at the end of June and is expected to miss the rest of the season due to surgery on his left hamstring. He has one year and $9 million remaining on his contract.
The sidearmer went 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA and two saves in 20 appearances with the Orioles this season. He spent seven of his 11 years in the majors with Baltimore.
Phillips, 23, was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk. He allowed six runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings for the Braves this season, his first action in the majors. He has been very steady at the Triple-A level, going 4-4 with a 1.99 ERA in 31 games, all in relief, while striking out 59 batters and walking 14 in 40 2/3 innings.
Encarnacion, 20, was batting .288 with 10 homers and 57 RBIs in 97 games for Class-A Rome this season, his first year above the rookie level. He was assigned to Class-A Delmarva.
Cumberland and Zimmerman were both assigned to Double-A Bowie.
Cumberland, 23, was a second-round pick in 2016 and has batted .228 with 11 homers and 39 RBIs in 87 games between Class-A and Double-A levels this year.
Zimmerman, 23, was a fifth-round pick in 2017. He went 9-4 with a 2.86 ERA in 20 starts at the Class-A and Double-A levels.
