Brandon Nimmo goes hitless in spring debut as Mets fall to Astros in rain-shortened game

The Mets fell to the Astros 5-2 in a rain-shortened affair at Clover Park.

Here are some key takeaways…

- Brandon Nimmo made his spring debut, leading off and playing left field. Nimmo grounded out in his first at-bat and flew out in his second AB.

All in all, Nimmo, played four innings in left field, going 0-for-2 before being subbed out for Ben Gammel.

Despite going hitless, it was a good sign for Mets fans to see Nimmo out in left field, where he will see the bulk of his playing time in 2024.

- Adrian Houser had a tough start to his afternoon, allowing a quick run on a Jonathan Singleton RBI double off the wall in the first. Fortunately he was able to get out of a two-on, two-out jam by showcasing a nasty two-seam fastball to strike out Will Wagner and end the threat after 24 pitches.

Houser lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out two and walking one.

- The Mets reassigned a number of their top prospects, including Jett Williams and Drew Gilbert, to minor league camp on Sunday morning. Luisangel Acuna was also optioned to Triple-A.

But there was still some young talent on display, as righty Dominic Hamel pitched the sixth inning. Unfortunately for Hammel, he was only able to throw 10 pitches before the game was stopped due to rain.

- After a brief delay, the game was called, with the Astros earning a 5-2 win.
