Boys soccer: Pacifica, five other local teams advance to CIF-SS quarterfinals

The pressure was turned up from the kickoff.

Michael Sauceda gave the Pacifica High boys soccer team the lead in the seventh minute and Francisco Hernandez doubled the lead 20 minutes later as the Tritons advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinals Friday with a 2-0 second-round win at Long Beach Wilson.

“That’s what we wanted to do,” Pacifica coach Andrew Navarro said. “We wanted to pressure them right away. We were on them. We got that quick goal.”

Bryant Martinez assisted both goals and Ruben Lopez kept a shutout in goal as the Tritons (19-5-2) moved on to a quarterfinal trip to Newport Harbor on Tuesday.

“He’s been playing really well lately,” Navarro said of Martinez. “Playing with confidence.”

Division 1

Oak Park 2, Alta Loma 1 (OT): Tyler Cash responded to missing a penalty kick in regulation to score the golden goal in overtime as the Eagles reached the quarterfinals.

“So proud of Tyler,” Oak Park coach Brandon Heidt said. “He stuck with it. … It was a legit finish.”

Charles Chowana put the Eagles ahead in the first half.

Oak Park (15-2-1) will visit Orange Lutheran in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Division 2

Newport Harbor 1, Agoura 0 (OT): Host Agoura finished its season 10-6-4 after conceding a winner late in overtime.

Beaumont 3, Channel Islands 1: Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Raiders equalized on the road when Damian Renteria scored off a corner kick from Raul Ambriz. But Beaumont scored two late goals to eliminate Channel Islands (16-3-3).

“Mistakes by us,” said Channel Islands coach Salvador Orozco.

Palmdale 1, Moorpark 0: The Musketeers season ended at 13-8-3 after a tight home loss to the division’s top seed.

Division 3

Thousand Oaks 2, Temecula-Great Oak 0: Santiago Diaz and Gabriel Torreblanca scored goals and Tristan Crandon and Andy Johnson combined for the shutout in goal as the Lancers advanced.

Thousand Oaks coach Mark Tietjen was impressed with his team’s performance, despite a five-hour drive in Friday night traffic.

“We played our best game of the season against the best team we’ve faced all season,” Tietjen said.

Thousand Oaks (14-7-3) will visit Buena Park in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Newbury Park 4, Adelanto 0: Isaac Berini scored two goals and Dragen Vrataric had three assists as the Panthers surged into the quarterfinals.

“He’s unstoppable,” said Newbury Park coach Eric Sanford of Vrataric. “He gets the ball and the whole crowd goes nuts.”

Berini gave the Panthers a 1-0 halftime lead and doubled the advantage in the 58th minute. Brady Gabler and Leonard Halpern added insurance goals in the final 15 minutes.

“They were just scrappy,” Sanford said of the goals.

Newbury Park (12-9-2) will host Salesian in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Division 4

Ventura 2, Coachella Valley 1: Marcos Hernandez and Cristiano Alverez scored first-half goals as the Cougars jumped on the hosts after a kickoff delayed by traffic.

Ventura (14-4-4) will visit Savanna in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Division 5

Foothill Tech 3, Laguna Beach 1: Ricky Salinas, Merric Bayless and Nico Flores scored as the Dragons advanced.

Foothill Tech will host Pasadena Poly at Ventura College in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Division 7

Hawthorne MSA 2, St. Bonaventure 0: The Seraphs (8-9-1) were eliminated in a first-round match in Gardena.
