Bon Homme/Avon claims No. 1 seed for Class B state dual wrestling tourney

Feb. 17—RAPID CITY — Behind an undefeated record, the Bon Homme/Avon wrestling squad will take the No. 1 seed into the Class B state dual wrestling tournament next week at The Monument.

The Cavaliers finished the season at 10-0 and will take on Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes in the first round of the tournament, which will be contested on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Wildkats (10-4) were second-place finishers a season ago.

Winner Area, the champions in 2022, will face No. 2 seeded Canton, which is 27-0 in duals this season. The C-Hawks and Warriors met in 2020 and 2021 for the state dual title, as well, with Canton winning those matchups. The Warriors have a record of 8-3, with the victor of that matchup advancing to face either No. 3 Custer (14-0) or sixth-seeded Parker (14-4). Fourth-seeded Elk Point-Jefferson (10-3) will face Big East Conference rival McCook Central/Montrose (19-3) in the quarterfinal round.

The eight teams were selected based on regular-season record, while also applying seeding criteria used for the individual tournament, as well, such as head-to-head meetings, records against common opponents and last year's state finish.

In Class A, undefeated Brandon Valley is the No. 1 seed, with Pierre seeded No. 2 and Sturgis at No. 3. Brandon Valley faces Aberdeen Central in the first round, with Pierre taking on Rapid City Stevens, Sturgis meeting Harrisburg and No. 4 West Central battling No. 5 Watertown in the quarterfinal round. The Lynx won the Class A title in 2022, defeating Rapid City Stevens, 32-25, with Brandon Valley joining the Raiders and Pierre as state dual champs since the format returned to state tournament in 2020.

The tournament will be contested starting at noon Central time on Feb. 25, followed by the semifinals and consolation rounds at approximately 1:30 p.m., or 15 minutes after the quarterfinal round. The championship, third-place and fifth-place matches will be wrestled at 5 p.m. Central in Rapid City.

All matches on Feb. 25 at The Monument, Rapid City.
