Saturday, May 4

Boys' golf

BLOOMINGTON NORTH INVITATIONAL: New Albany won the team title (314) over Columbus East (317) and Columbus North (323) while the Cougars were seventh (330) and Edgewood (369) struggled to 14th out of 15 as Cascades. Columbus North's Brady Schneider was medalist with a 1-under 70 to top Brownstown's Micah Sheffer (71). Grant McRea was just outside the top 10 with a 79 to lead North, while Eden Yoder had an 82, Hogan Conder an 84 and Rex Speer an 85. Alex Freund had an 89. Edgewood was led by an 86 by Carter Cheaney while freshman Hank Ripley had a 91 and then came three 96s by Calvin McDonald, Zayne Dwigans and Mitch Deckard.

STATE PREVIEW: Facing a field with all but one of the top-10 ranked teams in the state at Prairie View, No. 6 Bloomington South came in ninth at 317. No. 7 Guerin Catholic (296) topped No. 10 Evansville North (304) for the title with No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern third (305), then No. 2 Zionsville (306) and No. 4 Homestead and No. 5 Center Grove at 307. A pair of 70s topped the field individually. Happy Gilmore led South with a 75 to tie for seventh. Carson Gady tied for 23rd (78) while Connor Byon had an 81 and Colton Watson an 83. Luke Garrett had to withdraw.

Softball

EDGEWOOD INVITATIONAL: The Mustangs (14-5-1) rolled to three wins against overmatches squads while scoring 57 runs and giving up two. Edgewood punished Bloomfield 20-0 in the five-inning opener. Mustangs had 22 hits (including seven doubles), four from Piper Stephens. Ally Bland drove in five runs and tossed three perfect innings with nine strikeouts as she and Brylee Moore combined on 1-hitter. Then the Mustangs pounded Christel House 27-1 in five with 25 more hits to go with 8 Christel House errors. Freshman Lilly McIlhenney was 4-fof-5 with a homer two doubles and five RBI. Lizzy Austin had four 4RBI, Kirsten White was 4-for-4 with three RBI. Carly Collier, Brylee Moore combine on 1-hitter. Edgewood finished up with a 9-1 win over Shakamak. It had 14 hits as Jayden Stephens went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Courtney Hamilton had two doubles and drove in three. Ally and Madi Bland had three hits each. Ally Bland tossed four-hitter with 17 strikeouts. Box scores at MaxPreps.

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 10, TERRE HAUTE NORTH 3: Panthers (10-6, 2-1) remained in the CI hunt, jumping up 7-0 after four innings and cruising behind a 15-hit attack. Abby Purtlebaugh was 4-for-4 with another homer and four RBI. Morgan Cockerill (3-for-4) and Larkyn Ivey also homered. Kinsey Clopton gave up five hits, just one earned run and struck out nine. OWEN VALLEY 19, EMINENCE 2 (5 inn.): Patriots (9-5) jumped out to 10-1 run first inning and piled up 14 hits in the rout. Box scores at MaxPreps.

Baseball

EDGEWOOD AT HALL OF FAME TOURNEY (Jasper): It was a split for the Mustangs (11-5), who were dropped 13-1 in five innings in the opener by Barr-Reeve. South grad Trevor McConnell's crew, last year's 1A runner-ups, made it 11-1 by the end of the third inning, jumping on Jacob Boggs. The Mustangs could not respond with just two hits of Seth Wagler and committed five errors, leaving only two of the Vikings runs earned. In the nightcamp, Edgewood beat Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, 3-0 as Ziggy Teran tossed a 1-hitter. Carson Druckrey, Carter Hayden and Brayden Ault each had two hits. Box scores at MaxPreps.

HERITAGE HILLS ABE LINCOLN TOURNAMENT: Eastern Greene picked up two wins to take the title, topping the host school in the final, 6-3. Jacob bellman was 3-for-3 with two RBI, Will Inman was 2-for-4 and Gavin Whitfield went five innings, giving up just two hits and Rylin Patton closed it out. The T-Birds (12-3), who have now exceeded last year's win total of 11, opened with a 7-4 win over Lanesville. Kasen Cullison went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Peyton Lewis went 2-for-3. I

BLOOMFIELD 2, EASTERN GREENE 0: Lefty Boone Holtsclaw took a perfect game into the bottom of the seventh and walked a batter with two outs, but settled for a no-hitter for the 1A No. 7 Cards (10-4, 4-1) in a key SWIAC battle. Bloomfield scored a run in the second after an error and a base hit and added an insurance run in the sixth on a hit batter with the bases loaded. Gavin Whitfield then took over for Will Inman and closed it out as the Cards were limited to five hits. The T-Birds fell to 10-3, 3-2. Box score at MaxPreps.

JASPER 4, EDGEWOOD 1: The Mustangs struck first but the 3A No. 3 Wildcats struck harder with a three-run bottom of the fifth to take over in the first game of the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame Classic at Jasper. Carson Druckrey had two hits for Edgewood while going five innings and giving up seven hits and just one earned run. Will Lawson had the lone RBI. Edgewood (10-4) will take on Barr-Reeve, coached by South grad Trevor McConnell on Saturday at 1:15 and then Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger right after. Box score at MaxPreps.

FRANKLIN 3, BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 0: The Panthers (12-5) were handcuffed on a four-hitter, while Connor Osborne gave up just three hits and three walks over four innings. But the Grizzly Cubs made most of it with a three-run fourth. Box score at MaxPreps.

SOUTH PUTNAM 9, OWEN VALLEY 7: The Patriots (5-7, 2-5) led 3-2 after 4, then the Eagles (2-10, 1-5) scored seven of the next eight runs and hung on as OV plated three in the bottom of the 7th. Box score at MaxPreps.

Softball

BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 11, BLOOMINGTON NORTH 1 (5 inn.): A six-run second and a four-run fourth ended it early. Grayson Gill had two of the four hits for North (4-14), which has lost six straight. Macee Nicholson had three RBI for BNL. Box score at MaxPreps.

Boys' track

GREENE COUNTY INVITATIONAL: Eastern Greene won the title with 186 points to 124 for White River Valley. James Lewis won the 100 (11.2) and 200 (22.75), anchored the 1,600 relay to a win and was second in long jump (19-0¼). Jade Dawes won the 400 (53.27) and was runner-up in the 800 and 1,600. Roman Valentine and Brayten Enlow went 1-2 in the 300 hurdles and 3-4 in 110s. Valentine and Brayden Heerdinck were 1-2 in pole vault. Brody Teague (SP), Peyton New (D) and Jacob Crites (3,200) were all third. Complete results at timingmd.net.

Girls track

GREENE COUNTY INVITATIONAL: Linton (190) won the team title over Shakamak (105) and Eastern Greene (105). Lilyanna Blais had a busy night, winning the 800 (2:33.37) and placing second in the 400 (1:03.26), 1,600 (5:23.35) and 3,200. Esther Crane broke the meet record and her school record in the 3,200 (11:46.12) and as third in 1,600, where Linton's Peyton Smith broke record in 1,600 (5:13.36). Clara Hawk was second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 100 hurdles. Kena Maddox was second in high jump.

Thursday, May 2

Softball

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 2, SEYMOUR 1: Dramatic win for Panthers (9-6) as another freshman, Taylor Crohn, comes up big with the game-winning hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. South took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and it stayed 1-0 until the Owls tied it in the top of the seventh. Kinsley Clopton contained the damage, leaving two in scoring position and finishing the night with 14 strikeouts in a 132-pitch complete game. Then in the bottom half, Olivia Roberts singled and went to second on Lindsey Blanton's sac bunt to start against Seymour's relief pitcher. One out later, Crohn singled to left to end it. NORTHVIEW 4, BLOOMINGTON NORTH 0: The Cougars (4-13) were held to three singles and struck out 17 times in the road loss.

OWEN VALLEY 8, SOUTH PUTNAM 2: The Patriots (7-5, 5-1) stayed in the WIC hunt, outhitting the Eagles 12-6 but needing a late rally with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to erase a 2-1 deficit.

LINTON 10, EASTERN GREENE 0 (5 inn.): A six-run third put it away early. The T-Birds (6-8, 1-4) had just two hits in the SWIAC loss.

Boys' golf

BROWNSTOWN CENTRAL 157, BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 172, EDGEWOOD 183: The Braves were led by a 33 from Micah Sheffer to top two sectional foes at Cascades. Carter Cheaney had a 42 and Zayne Dwigans 45 to pace the Mustangs, while Mitch Deckard and Calvin McDonald each had 48s.

Wednesday, May 1

Softball

EDGEWOOD 15, NORTHVIEW 0 (5 inn.): The Mustangs (11-5-1, 5-1) romped to a WIC win as Ally Bland and Brylee Moore combined on a one-hitter. Edgewood had nine hits, the Knights had eight errors. Madi Bland was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI and Courtney Hamilton went 2-for-3 with four runs driven in. Box score at MaxPreps.

EASTERN GREENE 10, WHITE RIVER VALLEY 6: The T-Birds' (6-7) bats had a field day, bashing out 22 hits. Claira McGee, Ashlynn Bellman, Addy Ramey, Bailee Tieman and Delanie Davis each had three hits. Davis also had her first career homer. Jess Hovious was winning pitcher scattering nine hits. Box score at MaxPreps.

EDGEWOOD 12, NORTHVIEW 1 (5 inn.): Mustangs (10-3, 5-0) remain atop the WICs, exploding for 12 runs in the first two innings and needing just six hits on the day as the Knights committed three errors. Brayden Ault tossed a two-hitter and Carter Hayden had three RBI. Andrew Good and Sam Lawson each drove in two. Box score at MaxPreps.

CENTER GROVE 9, BLOOMINGTON NORTH 2: No. 1 Trojans (17-1) hammered out 16 hits off five pitchers and led 7-1 after four innings. North (6-11) was limited to three hits with Caden McCoy driving in both runs. AJ Beggs was 4-for-5 with a homer for CG. Box score at MaxPreps.

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 6, SOUTHPORT 4: Panthers (12-4, 2-1) need a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to pull out CI win. Sam Giles and Jacob Reinhart each had two hits and Keagan Palileo had two RBI for South, which had 12 hits to Cardinals' 11. Reid Walker got the win in relief. Box score at MaxPreps.

EASTERN GREENE 18, WHITE RIVER VALLEY 3 (5 inn.): T-Birds (10-2, 3-1) use a nine-run second to blow it open. Eastern had 15 hits with Will Inman smacking a homer and driving in four. Peyton Lewis had a homer and three RBI and Ty McKnight also homered. Jacob Bellman got the win as four pitchers combined to fan six. Box score at MaxPreps.

LOOGOOTEE 151, EASTERN GREEN 173, NORTHEAST DUBOIS 207: At Boggs Golf Club, Logan Russell had a 37 to pace Eastern while Roman Valentine had a 41, Nate Myers a 45 and Korbin Ikerd a 50 and Zach Shimkus a 52.

Tuesday, April 30

Baseball

EDGEWOOD 6, GREENCASTLE 3: The Mustangs (10-3, 5-0) took a 6-2 lead into the top of the seventh and hung on to stay atop of league. Jacob Boggs went four strong innings while Nolan Hudson and Anthony Shields finished up. Brayden Ault had two hits and two RBI and Andrew Good was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Mack Headdy had two hits. TERRE HAUTE NORTH 6, BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 3: Rough night in Conference Indiana play for Panthers (11-4, 1-1), who led 3-0 only to see Patriots (7-2, 2-2) rally and grab the lead on a two-run homer by Briar Goda in the top of the fifth. Freshman Nate Millington worked a complete game for THN. Lujke Arnett had two hits for South and Connor Osborne had the only RBI. Complete box at MaxPreps.

BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 5, BLOOMINGTON NORTH 4: Stars (11-6) get a walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh. North (6-11) trailed 4-0 but rallied to tie it, getting a run in the sixth. The Cougars outhit BNL 7-5 and the Stars committed four errors, but North pitchers walked six and struck out six. Joe Burton had two hits for North. Complete box at MaxPreps.

NORTH PUTNAM 9, OWEN VALLEY 7: The Patriots (4-6, 1-4) took a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth and couldn't hang on as the Cougars carded a four-run bottom half. OV had 14 hits but struck out 10 times. Box score at MaxPreps.

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 17, BLOOMFIELD 2 (5 inn.): Just two hits, 13 strikeouts for the Cards, who trailed 9-0 after the first inning. Panthers (8-6) collect 13 hits. Box score at MaxPreps.

EDGEWOOD 10, GREENCASTLE 0 (5 inn.): A nine-run fourth ended the WIC game early. Mustangs (10-5-1, 4-1) had 11 hits, including three homers, two by Jayden Stephens and another from Olivia McPherson. OWEN VALLEY 17, NORTH PUTNAM 4: Patriots (6-5, 4-1) exploded for 20 hits. Taylor Monroe was 4-for-5 with five RBI; Taylor York was 3-for-5 with five runs scored; Andi Burkhart was 2-for-4 with three RBI; Kalyn Green was 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI; McKynlee Bonds drove in three and Lucy Dyer was 3-for-4.
