AHL player takes puck to mouth, Tweets horrifying selfie (Photo)

Mitch Callahan is a forward in the Detroit Red Wings organization. There is he above from prospect camp four years ago, probably with a full set of teeth — possibly a mix of real and fake ones.

On Wednesday night, Callahan was playing for the Grand Rapid Griffins of the AHL when he was setting up shop in front of Iowa Wild goaltender Johan Gustafsson. A shot from the point by Ryan Spoul rose up and got him right in the choppers.

After he and his teammates found whatever lost teeth they could on the ice, Callahan took a very, very, very awful looking selfie to show exactly what kind of damage was done.

It’s bad.

Really.

You don’t have to look.

We’re warning you. Put any food down if you’re going to look.

You sure you wanna do this?

OK then.

Here it is:

It's unsure the exact number of teeth Callahan lost, but it's probably north of the six goals the Griffins scored in their 6-1 win over Iowa.

The Griffins are off until Friday and Saturday's two-game set against the Hamilton Bulldogs. Callahan has a pretty good excuse to take Thursday off after spending who knows how many hours in a dentist's chair trying to repair the mess that has become his mouth.

Hockey players, man.

UPDATE: Griffins head coach Jeff Blashill wasn't happy about the Tweet, telling Peter Wallner of MLive.com, "Shame on me for not having a more direct statement on that, but I just think we have to be real careful what we put out on social media."
