'Whalermania' video remembers the Whale in cheesiest way possible

From the vault of the great Jen Conway, a.k.a. @NHLHistoryGirl, comes this “Whalermania” video from the 1986-87 Hartford Whalers.

You’ll probably notice a few faces, like Ron Francis, Ulf Samuelsson, Dave Tippett and, by his mustache mostly, Dave Babych.

The '80s were pretty fly.

To their credit, if hopped on board Whalermania you saw the team finish atop the Adams Division and second overall in the Prince of Wales Conference. It was the only time during their NHL tenure that they division crown and finished higher than fourth in the Adams/Northeast. Their magical season came to an end in the first round when they were dispatched by the Quebec Nordiques in six games.

For whatever reason, cheesy music videos were all the rage among sports teams back then. Everyone remembers the Chicago Bears’ “Super Bowl Shuffle,” but let’s not forget the '89-90 Washington Capitals and "Capital Feeling," or the ’86-87 Calgary Flames “Red Hot” video, which Sean McIndoe properly dissected for Grantland in 2013.

The '80s were also a good time for enthusiastic saxophone playing. I mean, it’s not quite the high bar set by Sexy Sax Man, but it worked.
