Dr. Saturday's most popular posts in 2014

It’s been a great year for college football as we’ve made our way through the first season that will culminate in the inaugural College Football Playoff. In the months since the season began, there have been several stories that have made an impression on Dr. Saturday readers and generated our highest traffic of the season.

Here’s a look at the top 20 stories that made Dr. Saturday successful in 2014:

1. Ranking the bowl 1-38 (excluding the national championship) (Dec. 7)
Following the announcement of the bowl matchups, Dr. Saturday looked at each game and decided which were the ones worth watching and which ones were a pass. Here’s a hint, spend your Christmas Eve with your family, not watching the Hawaii Bowl.

2. Nebraska lineman falls on his behind in hilarious false start (Oct. 4)
Nebraska left guard Jake Cotton was caught off guard by a pre-snap blitz by Michigan State and while he tried to keep his balance (and hope the ball was quickly snapped), he couldn’t and fell like a statue on his keister. We hope everyone on the field got a good laugh out of this play because we sure did.

3. Ohio State fan that ran onto the field could lose his academic scholarship (Oct. 1)
Anthony Wunder’s moment of liquid courage that caused him to run onto the field and toward the Ohio State bench during a game against Cincinnati put the senior in hot water with the Evans Scholars Foundation, which was footing the bill for his education. Wunder ended up keeping his scholarship, but he had to complete an alcohol awareness program and issue a public apology.

4. Wisconsin scores just one second into game against Western Illinois (Sept. 6)
In one of the stranger plays of the season, Western Illinois running back Kyle Hamonds had an indecisive moment during the opening kickoff against Wisconsin and started to run the ball out the end zone before thinking better of it and stepping back into what he thought was a safe area. Unfortunately for Hammonds his step from red to green was caught by the officials and gave the Badgers two points without doing a thing.

5. WATCH: Ohio State strength coach Anthony Schlegel bodyslams fan who runs on field (Sept. 27)
We mentioned young Anthony Wunder in No. 3, but what we didn’t mention was the epic bodyslam he took when he approached the Ohio State bench. Wunder, who actually pleaded guilty to criminal trespassing, only had his pride hurt in the incident, but became an Internet sensation for about a week. There was some thought Schlegel could face legal action for his excessive force, but Wunder declined to pursue it.

6. Ohio State’s Kosta Karageorge found dead (Nov. 30)
In one of the saddest stories of the year, Ohio State defensive tackle Kosta Karageorge was found dead after going missing almost a week earlier. He was 22. Prior to his death, Karageorge had sent a text message to his family apologizing for being an “embarrassment.” Karageorge’s mother said her son had struggled with concussions.

7. Bowl Projections: Week 14 edition (Dec. 3)
Before the official bowls were announced, Dr. Saturday contributor Chris Wilson took his best guesses as to where various bowl eligible teams were heading in the postseason. Let’s just say, it’s not an exact science.

8. AJ McCarron’s mother asks if Jameis Winston is speaking English during his postgame interview (Jan. 7)
During the postgame interview of the national championship, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston excitedly said a bunch of things that weren’t exactly in proper English (but still in English), and Dee Dee Bonner, mother of former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, took to Twitter to ask if Winston was speaking English. Of course, her comment sparked all sorts of racial debate and vitriol on Twitter as she tried to defend her comments. Hard to believe that was nearly a year ago.

9. Nike unveils College Football Playoff uniform changes (Dec. 9)
In one of the most anticlimactic uniform unveils of the season, Nike announced minor tweaks to the uniforms of the four teams in the College Football Playoff. And when we say minor, we mean minor. The biggest change was Oregon helmet logo from wings to an “O.” Otherwise, each team – Alabama, Oregon, Florida State and Ohio State — will be donning new cleats, gloves and undershirts no one will see.

10. Maryland captains refuse to shake hands with Penn State’s captains (Nov. 1)
Prior to the supposed rivalry game between Maryland and Penn State, Maryland captains decided it would be a good idea not to shake the hands of the Penn State captains. Of course, this resulted in a penalty and ultimately a fine, a reprimand and a suspension for Maryland’s star receiver Stefon Diggs. So, perhaps the Terps will rethink that strategy next time.

And here is the best of the rest:

11. Tweet from WSU QB Connor Halliday after grisly leg injury will break your heart (Nov. 3)
12. After Week 6 drama, Florida State regains top spot in AP and Coaches polls (Oct. 5)
13. Hidden ball trick play helps Indiana State beat Missouri State (Nov. 1)
14. Dayton kicker scores touchdown on his own kickoff (Oct. 13)
15. No changes at the top of the CFP rankings, Boise State and Marshall emerge (Nov. 25)
16. Michigan reportedly has offered Jim Harbaugh $8 million a year (Dec. 17)
17. Ohio State sends Devin Gardner a letter thanking him for his compassion (Dec. 3)
18. Jameis Winston moved an official out of the way for a snap (Nov. 22)
19. Thanks to win over Michigan State, Oregon jumps Alabama in AP poll (Sept. 7)
20. Winners and losers: The Big Ten was bad — really, really bad (Sept. 7)
