Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker has revealed how an episode written by AI influenced the upcoming sixth season of the show.

The sci-fi anthology will return to Netflix later this month after a four-year break, with the five episodes being released simultaneously on June 15.

Ahead of the release, Brooker spoke with Empire Magazine about the upcoming episodes, revealing that an AI-generated script had an impact on the series.

“[I] toyed around with ChatGPT. The first thing I did was type 'generate Black Mirror episode,’” he said (via Entertainment Weekly). “It [came] up with something that, at first glance, reads plausibly, but on second glance, is shit.

“All it's done is look up all the synopses of Black Mirror episodes, and sort of mush them together. Then if you dig a bit more deeply you go, 'Oh, there's not actually any real original thought here.’

“I was aware that I had written lots of episodes where someone goes 'Oh, I was inside a computer the whole time!' So I thought, 'I'm just going to chuck out any sense of what I think a Black Mirror episode is.' There's no point in having an anthology show if you can't break your own rules,” he explained.

Brooker had previously explained that the new season would “reinvent itself with each new episode”, adding: “I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people - and myself - or else what’s the point? It should be a series that can’t be easily defined.”

The episode titles for the sixth season were revealed last month, with the instalments being called ‘Joan Is Awful’, ‘Loch Henry’, ‘Beyond the Sea’, ‘Mazey Day’ and ‘Demon 79’ respectively. The cast for the season includes Salma Hayek, Michael Cera, Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett, Annie Murphy and Zazie Beetz.

Black Mirror season 6 will stream on Netflix from June 15.
