Bills injury updates: Veteran signed to add linebacker depth

ORCHARD PARK - The Buffalo Bills injury list didn’t change much from Wednesday to Thursday, at least how it pertained to the players who were hurt last week in Miami.

UPDATE: Weather forces Bills playoff game vs Steelers to be moved to Monday: What to know

Linebacker Tyrel Dodson, wide receiver Gabe Davis, safety Taylor Rapp and cornerback Rasul Douglas all missed practice for the second day in a row and that’s never a good sign as the week carries on.

BILLS INJURY UPDATE Buffalo could be missing 4 key players vs. Steelers

Bills sign linebacker to practice squad

Dodson’s status, in particular, took a negative turn Thursday because the Bills re-signed veteran linebacker A.J. Klein to their practice squad. That would seem to indicate that the Bills believe Dodson will be unavailable when they host the Steelers Sunday in an AFC wild-card playoff game, and they may need to elevate Klein on game day as insurance behind young players Baylon Spector and Dorian Williams who would be in line to play for Dodson.

Spector stepped in last week and made four tackles on just 19 snaps and was widely praised for how he performed. Before Miami, he had played only six snaps on defense all season.

“I thought he stepped in and did a really good job,” said assistant head coach/defensive line coach Eric Washington said of the 2022 seventh-round draft pick. “He was physical. Baylon clearly understood the offense, understood some of the keys that he had to really focus on to put himself in a position to get to the football, to leverage formations and to be in a position to finish a play.

“It just speaks to Baylon's level of preparedness and just always keeping himself ready to step in and to contribute because you never know what might happen. But overall, I was really excited to watch him go out and compete at the level that he did.”

Bills injury replacements: Who might take their place

Rasul Douglas suffered a knee injury Sunday in Miami and has not yet practiced this week.
Rasul Douglas suffered a knee injury Sunday in Miami and has not yet practiced this week.

Dane Jackson would get the start if Douglas - who has been one of the Bills’ best players on either side of the ball since he came from Green Bay in a trade - can’t overcome his knee injury. After the game he had expressed that he would be able to play through it, but that decision isn’t ready to be made.

Jackson has done this before, of course, as he filled in during many games in place of injured Tre’Davious White. Like Spector, Jackson played well in Miami, one play in particular being a big third-down pass breakup in the fourth quarter.

Trent Sherfield played in place of Davis and he made one of the biggest plays of the game, catching a touchdown pass after a Josh Allen throw had been deflected into the air.

And Rapp has been a key sub package player when the Bills have used three safeties. He made the game-saving interception last week, but that was the play on which he suffered a calf injury. If Rapp is out, that elevates Cam Lewis into that spot.

Among other players who were not on the field during the media viewing of practice were offensive tackle Dion Dawkins and tight end Dawson Knox who are both battling illness, and punt returner Deonte Harty had a personal matter to attend to.
