'This was a big-game environment:' Moeller rallies to beat Mason in 10 innings

MASON, Ohio – The top two Division I teams in the state brought pitching staffs to Prasco Park that may be the best two in the state as well.

The Moeller Crusaders and Mason Comets are the top two teams in the Division I state poll conducted by the state coaches association.

Even with several of the top pitchers in the city taking the mound, a pitchers' duel never developed as the teams combined for 12 runs and 20 hits in a 7-5 win by Moeller over Mason in 10 innings.

At least a dozen scouts armed with radar guns and notebooks came to Prasco Park, a state-of-the-art stadium that is used for the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League and usually hosts the Big East Tournament. Each player had a picture card on the video scoreboard.

“These guys all know each other,” Moeller head coach Tim Held said. “They play with each other in the summer, they train at places together. Then all the people here. This was a big-game environment. It’s good for us to be in these situations so we can see when we get to the tournament or a big GCL game that we’re ready for that moment. That we can make those adjustments and perform under pressure.”

The Crusaders survived a tough defensive night. Their stat crew credited them with three errors. The crew manning the scoreboard gave them five. Either way, shaky defense gave the Comets numerous extra outs, whether it was errors or not retiring runners on time in grounders.
