Big fifth inning propels 49ers past Jefferson City

Aug. 6—Tupelo's offense found some late-inning life, and the 49ers staved off elimination at the American Legion Mid-South Regional on Saturday in Pelham, Ala.

Tupelo (35-2) broke open a tie game with a four-run fifth and held on for a 7-5 win over Jefferson City (Mo.). Up next is another elimination game at 2 p.m. Sunday against Gonzales (La.), a team the 49ers beat 2-1 on Thursday.

Tupelo's big fifth inning was highlighted by a bases-loaded walk to Matthew Roncalli and a two-run single by Davis Oswalt. Stone Collier's sac fly RBI made it a 5-1 game.

Tupelo added two more in the sixth on RBI doubles by Jackson Cheek and Oswalt. Jefferson City (26-7-1) scored four times in the bottom half, but Jack Taylor got the final four outs to earn the save.

Taylor Ballard earned the win, allowing four runs in 5 1-3 innings.
