Baseball: Westfield draws top seed in Union County Tournament, full pairings

Westfield drew the top seed in the Union County Tournament in the midst of an outstanding season on the diamond. Governor Livingston earned the No. 2 seed followed by third-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood and No. 4 Summit.

No. 8 Union Catholic meets ninth-seeded New Providence in the first round.

The tournament kicks off with Wednesday’s preliminary games. It continues with Saturday’s first round, the quarterfinals on May 8, the semifinals on May 11 and the final on May 13.

The higher seeds host until the semifinals at A.L. Johnson and the championship game at Kean University.

Defending champion Cranford is seeded fifth. Last season, the top-seeded Cougars defeated second-seeded Governor Livingston 1-0 in the final.

Westfield (11-1) won 12-5 over Governor Livingston (12-2) on April 26. Summit (10-3-1) defeated both Westfield and GL, but lost to Cranford and Scotch Plains-Fanwood, thus the reason for drawing the No. 4 seed.

17-Rahway at 16-Rahway, winner at 1-Westfield in first round

18-Plainfield at 15-Linden, winner 2-Governor Livingston in first round

First Round

9-New Providence at 8-Union Catholic

13-Oratory at 4-Summit

12-Union at 5-Cranford

10-Dayton at 7-Brearley

14-Roselle Park at 3-Scotch Plains-Fanwood

11-A.L. Johnson at 6-Elizabeth
