Baseball and softball stars receive FACA honors

The area's top baseball and softball players and coaches on the Treasure Coast were recognized as FACA Players and Coaches of the Year recently with area seniors receiving All-Star game nominees.

With the postseason in progress, only one baseball team is still in the mix for a state title while four softball teams will play next week in regional semifinals.

John Carroll Catholic's Tracen Cameron was chosen as the area's Most Valuable Player and 2A Player of the Year as the FIU signee has shined in all facets of the game.

Cameron has a 1.72 ERA across 40⅔ innings with 63 strikeouts on the mound and at the plate is batting .362 with seven doubles, three triples and 19 RBI.

South Fork softball standout Katie Kidwell was chosen as the 6A Player of the Year as the junior currently has a 14-4 record with a 1.57 ERA with 138 strikeouts in 102⅔ innings in the circle and is batting .321 with two home runs, five doubles and 14 RBI at the plate.

Jensen Beach junior Mallory Wheeler was the 4A Player of the Year and on the season so far has a 14-8 record with a 1.16 ERA and has 292 strikeouts against just 26 walks in 168⅓ innings in the circle and is batting .405 with four home runs and 17 RBI.

Centennial sophomore Hailey Brereton was the 7A Player of the Year and is coming a 16-strikeout perfect game thrown on Thursday in a 2-0 regional quarterfinal win against St. Cloud.

Brereton has a 12-5 record with a 1.15 ERA and has struck out 226 batters over 127⅓ innings in the circle and is batting .250 with a home run, six doubles and nine RBI.

John Carroll Catholic freshman Sammi Rychter was selected as the 2A Player of the Year and is currently on a 20-game hitting streak and for the season is batting .519 with nine doubles, three triples and 21 RBI.

In 3A, Lincoln Park Academy softball senior Madison Davis was selected as the Player of the Year. The Converse University signee batted .522 with four home runs, one triple, six doubles and 21 RBI and in the circle had a 3-1 record and a 1.75 ERA over 64 innings, striking out 108 batters.

In 6A, Martin County senior Bayli Legg was chosen as the Player of the Year. The Indian River State College signee batted .477 with one home run, two triples, 10 doubles and 18 RBI.

Davis and Jensen Beach senior and Stetson signee Annalise Buncy were selected to represent the Treasure Coast at the Senior All-Star Game, with Centennial's Victoria Hazelton an alternate.

In 3A for baseball, Lincoln Park Academy senior Jakob Warren was chosen as the Player of the Year. Warren batted .420 with one home run, eight doubles and 14 RBI and pitched to a 4.28 ERA in 36 innings, striking out 39 batters on the mound.

Jensen Beach junior Cian Copeland was voted the 4A Player of the Year after batting .377 with three home runs, one triple, nine doubles and 19 RBI and on the mound pitched to a 2.82 ERA with 31 strikeouts across 27⅓ innings.

Okeechobee junior Gavin Kindell was selected as the 5A Player of the Year after batting .333 with 18 stolen bases and 13 RBI at the plate and had a 2.91 ERA in 22 innings, striking out 27 batters on the mound for the Brahmans.

Martin County senior and Miami signee Nick Robert earned 6A Player of the Year honors after going 3-1 with a 1.67 ERA, striking out 53 batters over 29⅓ innings on the mound and batted .280 with three home runs, one triple, three doubles and 11 RBI.

Treasure Coast junior Logan Zavala was picked as the 7A Player of the Year after batting .410 with one home run and 24 RBI and pitched to a 3.63 ERA over 34⅔ innings with 28 strikeouts.

Cameron and Jensen Beach senior and Indian River State College signee Chris Knier will represent the area at the Senior All-Star Game with Robert as an alternate.

John Carroll Catholic’s Rico Rosado (2A), Lincoln Park Academy’s Ashley Langel (3A), Jensen Beach’s Sarah Gillooly (4A), South Fork’s Trevor Rolle (5A), Martin County’s Kelvin Vargas (6A) and Treasure Coast’s Floyd McNair (7A) were all chosen as Softball Coaches of the Year for their classification.

John Carroll Catholic's Dave Parra (2A), Lincoln Park Academy's Timothy Howard (3A), Jensen Beach's Corey Cooke (4A), South Fork's Dan Harper (5A), Sebastian River's Grey Ange (6A) and Centennial's Vic Garcia (7A) were selected as the Baseball Coaches of the Year for their classification.
