Game recap: Nanuet 6, Tappan Zee 3

ORANGEBURG - A year older, wiser and hungrier has been all the difference for Nanuet.

The Golden Knights took another big step forward on Wednesday, battling back from behind to defeat league rival Tappan Zee, evening the season series and getting a 6-3 road victory.

They've come a long way since finishing 5-15 last season. Wednesday's win marked their sixth straight in a much-improved year.

"We have systems in place, we believe in systems and they worked," Nanuet coach Carlos Fidalgo said. "They were good systems, we just weren't as talented as we are now this year. We're older, we're better, and we added Aidan (Kempf) back from being injured all last year, and we're all clicking because the kids' effort is outstanding and it's paying off.

"It's nice to win in different ways. They're a great team, Coach Stanford is a great coach, they got a great program and studs everywhere. To be tough enough to hang in and go after it, and come out on top, it's a great opportunity for us."

Nanuet struck first, taking a 1-0 lead after three innings. It didn't last long, though, as Tappan Zee hung three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead.

While they might've faltered in the past, the Golden Knights didn't roll over after losing the lead.

"We never said die," Nanuet junior Charlie Moustakakis said. "We just kept battling. Even when we were down, we kept grinding and it paid off in the end."

Nanuet answered right back in the top of the fifth. Moustakakis delivered the game-tying two-run single on a grounder down the line that stayed fair.

The Golden Knights left the bases loaded, but they came back the following inning and reclaimed the lead, capitalizing on a couple of miscues by the Dutchmen.

An errant throw to third base allowed Joe Piscitelli to come around and cross home for the go-ahead run. The Golden Knights scored one more in the sixth after an error.

Nanuet added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a RBI by Ryan Trombley, who would close things out for the save in the bottom half of the seventh.

The Dutchmen made things interesting in the final inning, getting two runners on with no outs on the board, but Nanuet was able to buckle down and hang on for the win.

"No one was down in the dugout, energy was still up," Nanuet senior Aidan Kempf said. "No one got down on themselves. We talked to each other about what we were seeing from the pitcher and it all worked out."

With Wednesday's game both Nanuet and Tappan Zee are tied with 4-1 records in league play. They will meet again on Friday, with the winner likely taking the driver's seat for the league title.

"We deserved to lose," Tappan Zee coach Mark Stanford said. "Nanuet played better, Aidan threw a great game and hat's off to them. The team that makes the fewest mistakes generally wins most of the games, and I don't care what sport we're talking about. Today, we made mistakes at bad times, and they took advantage of that. That's what goo teams do. That turns a tie game into a loss for us, and we got to own that."

Players of the game: Aidan Kempf and Charlie Moustakakis, Nanuet — Kempf delivered another strong outing on the mound. The Pace-committed senior missed all of last season after undergoing knee surgery, but he continued his strong comeback season on Wednesday. Kempf was credited with the win, throwing six innings on the mound, with three earned runs on seven hits and one walk allowed, while striking out seven batters.

As for Moustakakis, he went 3-for-4 at the plate, with a double, one run scored and two RBIs. Moustakakis had a key two-run single to tie the game up at 3-3.

By the numbers

Nanuet (8-3): Ryan Trombley got the save, getting two strikeouts and allowing one hit in the final inning. Trombley was also 2-for-4 with a RBI. Vincent Duffy had a hit and a RBI. Andrew Hastings was 1-for-2, and Nolan Keenan was 1-for-3.

Tappan Zee (9-3): Kaleb Hetzel had three earned runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out three batters in the no-decision. He tossed the first five innings of the game. Ben Fishel pitched the remainder of the game, giving up one earned run on two hits, while striking out four batters. Fishel also went 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot. Anthony Marsico was 1-for-4 with a double. Harris Cucaj, Jake Ciorra and Tom Campanella each went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Rene Vega was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a hit-by-pitch, while Michael Traina was 1-for-3 with a RBI.

They said it

"We're still in control, we just have to regroup, refocus and go back at it on Friday. (Nanuet) is a good team, they're going to compete and do good things. I've coached against Carlos (Fidalgo) for years and it's always fun to compete against them, I would just like for us to compete a little better." -Tappan Zee coach Mark Stanford

"It's certainly been fun. I'm glad for (our players) to experience that success, but for us, the only day that's important is tomorrow. The only thing important for us is tomorrow's practice, because after that, we can play a game on Friday, but we can't play a game tomorrow. They've bought into that mentality of just playing that day, being in the present and I'm really proud of them." - Nanuet coach Carlos Fidalgo

"I worked hard last year, throughout rehab. Tried to get back towards the end of the season, get back to my boys, pitch for them, but now I'm here. Just happy to be here and play with my boys again." -Nanuet senior Aidan Kempf on his comeback season, his first full high school season since sophomore year.

Game recap: Suffern 3, North Rockland 2 (9 innings, Crotty-Konkowski Cup game)

POMONA - The records hardly mean a thing whenever rivals Suffern and North Rockland come together.

The Mounties have had some ups and downs entering Saturday, but with the Red Raiders standing across from them, plus the emotions of Senior Night mixed in, and the series-deciding game and the annual Crotty-Konkowski Cup back up for grabs at Clover Stadium, Suffern was prepared to do whatever it took to emerge victorious and it expected the Red Raiders to feel the same way.

What started as a technical pitchers' duel between two high-caliber Division I-committed aces, finished as an emotional thriller that stretched into extra innings. Nearly four hours later, Suffern was able to emerge victorious and bring the Crotty-Konkowski Cup back home after fending off the resilient Red Raiders in a 3-2 thriller.

"I'm just really proud of our team, it was truly a team win and we really needed everybody to show out," said Mounties' ace Connor Southwell. "I'm just proud of the boys. A lot of people had some big individual moments, but we really just stuck together. There were a lot of times where it looked like we could have lost this game and we could have really let it go, but we just stayed together, played as a team and came out with the 'W.'"

In a game that had plenty of momentum-shifting moments, the Mounties took the lead for good in the top of the ninth. With two outs and senior Alex Polombo on second base, Aiden Bernstein entered the game as a pinch-hitter and sent a ground ball towards the right side. The Red Raiders fielded the ball, but with no one covering the base at first, it became a foot race.

Bernstein hustled down the line and beat the scrambling Red Raiders defense by a half-step to the bag. Meanwhile, Polombo was focused on reaching home. With Bernstein safe at first, Polombo was able to successfully cross home and score the go-ahead run.

"(Bernstein) always puts the ball in play, so I knew if anything, we gotta score," Polombo said. "I rounded the corner at third and I saw the second baseman flipping it. I knew it was going to be close, and I just booked it. Slid in home safely and when this place erupted, it just made me feel something I'd never felt before. Crazy different emotions, just seeing everyone so hyped. Our guy, who got called in to pinch hit did his job and seeing the emotion from everyone, just a crazy feeling."

The Red Raiders didn't go away quietly. After getting back-to-back runners on, North Rockland threatened with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and one out.

Suffern was able to hang on, as the Mounties were able to complete the game-ending double play to hang on for the win.

"It's always good to bring the cup home," Suffern coach Mike Cronin said. "Both teams played with a lot of fire and passion."

Both teams had their share of opportunities, scares and big-time gut checks. Suffern left 13 runners on base throughout the game, while North Rockland had 12.

The Mounties and Red Raiders were stuck in bases-loaded jams in both halves of the third inning, but they were able to escape and keep it a scoreless battle. The first hits of the game didn't come until the fourth.

Suffern got a breakthrough in the fifth inning, when it scored one run on a passed ball and another on a bases-loaded walk to take a 2-0 lead.

North Rockland had runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings, but Suffern was able to shut down the threat. Southwell got a key strikeout to end the fifth inning, then the Mounties halted the Red Raiders' momentum with a big sixth-inning double play.

The Red Raiders put on their rally caps in the bottom of the seventh, and they salvaged the game by loading up the bases. They returned the favor by drawing a bases-loaded walk and then scoring the game-tying run on a passed ball, but Suffern kept things knotted up by turning a crucial double play to push the game into extras.

"After they tied it up and we got out of the inning, we knew this wasn't going to be given to us and we were going to have to fight," Polombo said. "Get on base, get 'em over, and get them in. Keep the energy up and push the negatives into positives, and we did just that."

What it means

The Crotty-Konkowski Cup is headed back to Suffern. The Mounties won the three-game season series with historic rival North Rockland. They play the third game each year at Clover Stadium and it is both teams' Senior Nights.

The cup is named after Vincent Crotty and Christopher Konkowski, two former students at Suffern High School and players on the varsity baseball team. Their lives were cut short prior before the 2010 season, and the cup game was established in their honor.

"As I said to North Rockland and Suffern after the game, this was the perfect homage to Vinny and Chris," Cronin said. "What a great-played high school baseball game by both teams. Cespedes was incredible, firing back and forth. Southwell firing back and forth. Just an incredible high school baseball game."

Player of the game

Connor Southwell, Suffern: The Boston College-committed ace was big time on Senior Night. He went 5.2 innings in the pitchers' duel, with no runs and four hits allowed, while striking out 10 batters and walking three. Even when the Red Raiders threatened with runners in scoring position, Southwell showed major poise and got key strikeouts to get out of high-pressure jams. He didn't give up any hits until the fourth inning. Southwell also went 1-for-2 at the plate and scored a run.

"I didn't want to try to be perfect on the mound," Southwell said. "I knew we could scratch a couple of (Cespedes), but going into this game you're not expecting to get a big lead so you have make sure you're locked in at all times. You can't waste pitches. That was my approach -- try not to be perfect, but try to be pretty close to it."

By the numbers

Suffern (8-7): Alex Polombo pitched the final three innings of the game, getting the win in relief. He allowed one unearned run, two walks and three hits, while getting four strikeouts. He also had a hit and scored two runs, including the go-ahead score in the top of the ninth. Joseph Gelb had a bases-loaded walk RBI. Aiden Bernstein had the pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth-inning, winning a footrace to first base before Red Raider defenders got to the bag. Nick DeFelice and Alex Koprowski each had a hit.

North Rockland (8-3): Maryland commit Cris Cespedes was also impressive on the mound. The hard-throwing senior went 4.2 innings, with no earned runs and four hits allowed, with nine strikeouts and five walks. He didn't give up any hits until the fourth inning. Christian Mariotti was 2-for-4. Jacob Herrera, Michael Mandia, Steven Barbosa, Gabe Reyes and Jaden Vasquez each had a hit.

They said it

"(North Rockland coach) Joe (Sottile's) dad and (former Suffern coach) Ron Gamma started this wood bat game way back when and it continues today. I'm just very honored to be able to continue it with these boys. We needed this. We've had an up and down season, and I hope that this is our turning point, because these boys know they can play great and I think they showed it tonight." - Suffern coach Mike Cronin

"This is a huge boost for team morale. Going into this game, we just dropped a close game to John Jay-East Fishkill and we let some games slip from us, so it's really big to get a big win here and hopefully we can use this momentum going into the rest of the season." - Suffern ace Connor Southwell

Game recap: Clarkstown North 3, Clarkstown South 1 (Supervisor's Cup game)

POMONA - Clarkstown North and Clarkstown South are guaranteed to meet two more times this season, but none will compare to Sunday's rivalry series-opener, with bragging rights and the Supervisor's Cup back up for grabs under the bright lights of Clover Stadium.

Not even a 25-minute stoppage for rain during a suspenseful inning could drown the mood or dampen each dugout's energy.

In the end, the Rams were able to reclaim the Supervisor's Cup for the second straight year, defeating the Vikings, 3-1.

"The thing about these games is you don't have to get your guys too hyped up," Clarkstown North coach Joe Stefania said. "We were a little bit worried about the storm coming, but it was a good day. The guys were ready. They've been playing good baseball lately."

Clarkstown South was trailing, 1-0, in the fifth inning, when it got a big spark from Justin Amodeo, who led off with a double, before the game was temporarily halted due to heavy downpour.

Once the rain cleared and play resumed, Jake Gronowski pounced on a pitch and delivered the game-tying RBI double to even things up at one run apiece.

The Rams answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. Connor Nolan got on base with two outs, and teammate L.J. Macias followed up with the go-ahead RBI triple into right field.

"I remember walking up to bat, looking into the outfield and seeing the right fielder was nowhere to be found," Macias said of his game-changing triple. "I thought, if he gives me an outside fastball, I'm going to sit on it until the last possible second and I did what I was supposed to do – drove it down the line and it worked out."

The Rams added an insurance run in the sixth inning, when Brendan Epstein had a pinch-hit RBI sacrifice fly to pad Clarkstown North's lead.

Clarkstown South threatened with runners at the corners in the seventh inning, but the Rams were able to close things out and prevent any rally.

"We've been looking forward to this game for a while, it was a whole team effort," said Clarkstown North pitcher Michael Goodman, who threw six solid innings in the winning effort. "I couldn't have done it without the rest of my team. These are the boys you grow up with, go to middle school with them, and you constantly want to be better than them. It feels good to have the cup. It feels good to have it back."

Connor Cullen of Clarkstown North was called for interference as he plowed into Jake Gronowski of Clarkstown South while trying to break up a double-play during the Supervisor's Cup varsity baseball game at Clover Stadium in Pomona April 28, 2024. Clarkstown North defeated Clarkstown South 3-1 to win the rivalry game.

The Rams got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, when Connor Cullen put the ball in play and a Clarkstown South error allowed Cullen to reach base safely and a teammate to cross home plate.

The Vikings settled in after that, thanks to a scrappy effort from Kyle Sperring and the Viking defense, but they were unable to muster the timely hits to snatch the lead.

"I thought it was a pretty well-played game, Goodman pitched a good game," Clarkstown South coach Mike Amendola said. "They were able to capitalize on our one mistake, and they made a couple mistakes, but they were able to get the big outs and we couldn't get the big hit."

The two teams are slated to meet again two more times in league play. After shaky starts to the season, both the Rams and Vikings have been starting to build up momentum over the last few weeks. They've been playing at a level that's higher than their record indicates.

"We've come a long way in the last two weeks, we won three games a row," Amendola said. "We're competing, we're getting better every day, and we just need to push through the finish line and get the big hit when we need to. For the most part in the last couple of weeks, we've been really hitting the ball. Today, we ran into a good pitcher and he got the big outs when he needed to.

"Kyle (Sperring) tried to gut through it today and only gave up three runs, and one was after a miscue defensively, and the other they were able to push across when the kid stuck it inside the line. We're right there. We played all the good teams and we think we're right there with them, we just got to put it all together."

As for the Rams, they want to continue rolling, after now winning five of their last six games.

"This is a great momentum boost, we're hot right now," Macias said. "We're 5-1 in our last six games. We're rolling. This is a great way to start the week."

What it means: The Supervisor's Cup is headed back to Clarkstown North for the second straight year. Both teams have been starting to click on the diamond, and while they'll be focused on games throughout the upcoming days, they'll be looking forward to the rematch on Monday, May 6. Player of the game: Michael Goodman, Clarkstown North – The Delaware-committed ace was solid and efficient on the mound. He threw six strong innings, with just one earned run, three hits and one walk allowed. He also struck out four batters in the winning effort.

"I was just trying to throw first-pitch strikes, attack the batters, not fall behind the counts and just win the battle," Goodman said. "I fought out there, my teammates backed up with the bats. They're the ones scoring the runs, so I couldn't do it without them."

They said it

"We were hitting the ball hard today, you got to give Sperring a lot of credit. He did a really good job with command in the zone. I don't know if he walked anybody, but he did a really nice job. We had a couple of timely hits. Probably one of the biggest moments of the game was when Macias hit that triple to turn the tide for us, then that extra run in the sixth was big, when (Epstein) got that sac fly RBI, but Sperring did a great job of keeping his team in it today." -Clarkstown North coach Joe Stefania

"This is what we worked for. Every day, we knew this game was coming. Biggest game of the year, we love it. Good to have it back. We love it." Clarkstown North's L.J. Macias
