Ballard boys track continues to build, girls tennis stays on top

The Ballard boys track and field team continued its strong season after it competed at the South Hardin Coed Meet last week.

The Bombers ran at the meet on April 19, where they placed second overall among a field of eight teams after scoring 176 total team points.

Ballard was led by a number of first-place finishes at the meet that helped it secure second, led by sophomore Max Davidson, who landed first in a couple of events. Davidson finished first in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs with times of 5:07.50 and 11:02.34, respectively.

Senior Eli Rouse also grabbed the top spot in his event, doing so in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.76 seconds.

Rounding out the first-place individual finishers was sophomore Dillon Shoen, who nabbed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.49. Senior Jameson Witt also performed well in the event, placing third with a time of 2:14.24.

Ballard’s relay teams also did well at the meet, with a few finishing first as well.

The Bombers placed first in the 4x400 meter relay, 4x800 meter relay, sprint and distance medleys, while the shuttle hurdle relay placed second. Rounding out Ballard’s relays was its 4x100 meter team, which finished third.

The Bombers will look to build off of this performance when they compete at the Comet Relays at 4:30 p.m. April 23 at North Polk High School.

Girls tennis stays on top

The Ballard girls tennis team had another strong showing this past week after competing in the Knoxville Tournament.

The Bombers competed against six other teams at the tournament on April 19, placing second overall with 19 total points.

Ballard got strong performances from both its singles and doubles matches, going 5-2 in its singles matches before finishing 7-2 in doubles.

Junior Kaitlyn Zugay and senior Ava Easter each picked up a few wins in their singles matches to help guide the Bombers to a win, with Zugay taking three matches while Easter won a pair of singles matches as well.

Seniors Ellie Volkmann and Jocie Hobbs then paired up for four of Ballard’s seven doubles wins, getting the doubles matches started with a big match win that went to three sets.

Junior Payton Askelsen and senior Memphis Inglett followed in their tracks, earning three wins together as well to carry Ballard to a second-place finish.

The Bombers will look to continue their strong run this season when they take on Saydel at 4:15 p.m. April 23 at Ballard High School.
