Auburn students start celebrating early, awkwardly miss end of Final Four loss to Virginia

Auburn students swarmed the iconic Toomer’s Corner on campus on Saturday night, ready to celebrate with toilet paper in hand.

After all, the Tigers had just knocked off Virginia in the Final Four in Minneapolis, earning a bid to the national championship game on Monday night.

Well, that’s at least what the students thought had happened.

The Tigers fell to Virginia 63-62 at US Bank Stadium on Saturday night, thanks to a late foul call and three free throws from Virginia guard Kyle Guy with just 0.6 seconds left in the game.

But when students saw that the Tigers held a two-point lead with just seconds left on the clock, they assumed that they had won — and rushed to throw toilet paper all over Toomer’s Corner, as is the tradition after a huge victory.

That made things, well, a little awkward.

It’s easy to feel for the students on campus, who were clearly crushed and experienced the full range of emotions after learning of the loss in mid-celebration.

Next time, though, maybe take a second and make sure that your team has actually won the game before rushing to the streets to celebrate.

Premature celebrations not limited to campus

Students on campus in Alabama weren’t the only ones who started celebrating prematurely.

One fan inside US Bank Stadium was so excited after he thought that Auburn had won that he dumped his nearly-full beer on his head.

When he realized that the foul was called and that Virginia had won, the fan was quickly confronted by security.

Again, take a second and make sure that your team has actually won the game before celebrating. You’ll be better off.
