Artesia Bulldogs prepare to face Roswell High School for 5A state football championship

The Artesia Bulldogs quest for state football title No. 32 ends with Roswell on Saturday in Artesia as the Coyotes seek to remain undefeated and win the 5A trophy against its district rivals.

Artesia might be seeking revenge at the Bulldog Bowl as the Coyotes defeated Artesia 29-8 in a regular season game Oct. 13 in Roswell.

Records: Roswell 12-0, 3-0; Artesia 11-1, 2-1

Last week: Roswell shutout Deming 45-0 in the 5A semifinals; Artesia downed Farmington Piedra Vista 50-0, in the other semifinal game.

Top players to watch: Artesia-QB Nye Estrada (completed 172 passes for 2,417 yards with 29 touchdowns); RB Frankie Galindo (131 carries for 1,144 yards with 25 touchdowns, 23 catches for 387 yards for five touchdowns); SB Ethan Conn (58 catches for 890 yards and 14 touchdowns); Roswell-QB Manny Fuentez (completed 12 of 17 passes for 209 yards with two touchdowns last week against Deming); WR Josh Palomino (caught three passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns last week against Deming); WR Josh Estrada (last week against Deming caught five passes for 65 yards with two touchdowns).

The Scoop: Roswell is the No. 1 seed in the 5A playoffs and Artesia is the No. 2 seed. Bulldog head coach Jeremy Maupin said Artesia practiced during Thanksgiving break. “We know we are going to be in for a battle. They’ve got a lot of guys with experience back,” he said.
