This year sees Manchester City try to defend their crown and claim a historic fourth title in succession. Meanwhile Luton Town are making their first appearance in the Premier League, having risen from non-league in an incredible decade of progress. They followed Championship winners Burnley and second-placed Sheffield United in earning promotion to the top flight.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

18:31

Suddenly, Arsenal throw the Premier League title race wide open after a 3-1 victory over the league-leading Liverpool at Emirates Stadium. Saka opened the scoring after 14 minutes, prodding in a simple rebound after Havertz was denied from close range. A needless Saliba mistake allowed the Reds a way back into the contest on the stroke of half-time, with Diaz sneaking in to prod a low cross off Gabriel for an own goal. Klopp’s tactical tweaks seemed to have the visitors back in the game in the second half, only for Van Dijk and Alisson to comically fail to communicate and tee up the simplest of Martinelli goals. It did not improve for the Liverpool goalkeeper either as Trossard rolled a tame finish through his legs to seal victory in the 92nd minute. Arteta’s men move within two points of Liverpool at the top-flight summit, ahead of the Gunners’ visit to West Ham on Sunday. The Reds must find a response when they host relegation-threatened Burnley on Saturday. That is all for now, until next time. Goodbye for now!

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Renewed belief engulfs the Emirates as the full-time whistle approaches. Liverpool are heading towards just their second league loss of the season, with this defeat a cruel blow in their title hopes. This is not what Klopp will have envisaged at all.

Klopp cuts a frustrated figure on the touchline. Having already made a mistake against Martinelli, Alisson fails to make a simple save against Trossard. Arteta's side are going to cut the gap to two points at the Premier League summit.

The home crowd are bewildered after Van Dijk clatters into Havertz in an aerial duel. Referee Taylor points for a Liverpool free-kick, infuriating the Arsenal supporters and Jorginho. The VAR checks the tackle for potential dangerous play by Van Dijk, but the original decision stands.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Arsenal vs Liverpool

18:18

Martinelli has scored five goals against Liverpool, his joint-most versus a single side for Arsenal (level with Crystal Palace). In addition, no player has been directly involved in more league goals against the Reds since the start of last term (three goals, two assists). His second-half strike is the difference at the moment.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

18:15

CHANCES! Arsenal remain patient in possession before Odegaard cuts inside from the right-hand flank. The Arsenal midfielder curls towards the unmarked Kiwior, who heads straight at Alisson. Down the other end, Nunez races onto a long pass in behind before hammering a wild right-footed strike well over the target.

Substitution Joseph Dave Gomez Thiago Alcântara do Nascimento

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Robertson's right-sided corner is cleared by the head of Gabriel. Trossard thinks about a counter-attacking break before opting to go backwards. Jorginho then has a similar though but once again prefers the cautious option in possession.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

18:14

Gomez and Kiwior go head-to-head once again as the Arsenal left-back defends behind for a corner. Robertson will come over to take this one...

Arsenal vs Liverpool

18:13

Liverpool have scored in each of their last 17 Premier League games against Arsenal since a goalless draw in August 2015. Overall, they’re the only side to score 100+ goals against the Gunners in the competition (109). The Reds need a late equaliser here.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

18:11

Nelson skips around Konate but is then confused as referee Taylor has pulled play back for a foul throw. That decision does not go down too well with the home crowd, nor Arteta on the touchline.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

18:09

Saka requires medical attention from the Arsenal physios, seemingly struggling from an issue with his right leg. Arteta watches on, perhaps anxiously, as the England international holds his head. Could this be the end of his game?

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Substitution Bukayo Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka Reiss Luke Nelson

Arsenal vs Liverpool

18:08

CLOSE! Kiwior is forced into more defensive action, tackling behind for a corner against Gomez. Robertson wanders over to take the set-piece, swinging a near-post that is headed away by Havertz. Mac Allister waits on the edge of the area, hammering a volley just wide to Raya's left. So close for the visitors.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

18:06

Elliott lifts a right-wing delivery towards the back post, where Raya claims before the Arsenal goalkeeper rolls out for Rice. His long pass for Trossard is then poor, however, and Liverpool settle for a throw-in.

Substitution Gabriel Teodoro Martinelli Silva Leandro Trossard

Arsenal vs Liverpool

18:03

Arsenal have taken five points from their last three Premier League games against Liverpool (W1 D2), as many as they had in their previous 12 (W1 D2 L9). They’re looking to remain unbeaten in four league games against the Reds for the first time since between December 2014 and January 2016 (W1 D3). That could be on the cards here.

Yellow Card Jakub Piotr Kiwior

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Mac Allister looks to respond for Liverpool, driving forward before pulling a left-footed strike wide to Raya's left. The Emirates is rocking as Arsenal fans start to dream of a title charge.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:59

Martinelli has more goal contributions against Liverpool in all competitions than he has against any other opponent for Arsenal (five goals, two assists). The Brazil winger will never be granted a simpler finish against the Reds than that one, though.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:57

Goal Gabriel Teodoro Martinelli Silva

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:56

Across his five appearances at the Emirates Stadium for Liverpool, Jota has averaged a goal or assist every 41 minutes in all competitions before this game (five goals, two assists in 287 minutes). Indeed, since the start of 2020-21 (his first season with Liverpool), Mohamed Salah (seven at Old Trafford) is the only Premier League player to have scored more goals at an away ground in all competitions than Jota’s five at Arsenal. He has yet to get involved here, though.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:56

ARSENAL WANT A PENALTY! Martinelli receives possession on the left-hand touchline and sends a throughball down the flank for Havertz. The Arsenal makeshift forward gets in front of Mac Allister but is dispossessed by his recovering tackle. The Gunners appeal for a penalty but referee Taylor shakes his head. The VAR then sticks with the on-field call.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:52

Rice's inswinging corner heads towards a congested near-post area but the result is a Liverpool goal-kick. Alisson continues to be crowded from any set-piece chance but, for now, remains untested.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:52

OPENING! Rice bursts forward, powering past Diaz on halfway before offloading to his right. Saka runs at Robertson, cutting inside from the flank before curling a left-footed effort well over Alisson's target, albeit via a deflection.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:51

Saka is down inside the Arsenal area, holding his neck after some apparent discomfort following what appeared to be an arm from team-mate Gabriel. The England winger will be fine to continue, even if slightly confused to be caught by his colleague in defence.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:51

Gomez is soon involved in his new right-back position, winning a corner for his side. Robertson whips the set-piece toward the near post but Havertz intervenes at the near post to head clear.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:48

Klopp makes a double change. Alexander-Arnold comes off from right-back, with Robertson coming on. The Scotland international will slot in on the left, with Gomez moving over to the other flank.

Jota has tons of time from Alexander-Arnold's pass but his left-wing cross is comfortably headed away by Saliba. It appears Klopp is readying some changes on the touchline as Odegaard fells Jones in the middle.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:43

SO CLOSE! Alexander-Arnold is caught napping at the back as Jorginho passes through for Havertz, who tees up Odegaard. The Norway midfielder dances onto his left foot before his rasping drive is deflected just wide of Alisson's right-hand post by Konate.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:42

Odegaard touches a smart first-time pass through for Havertz but the makeshift Arsenal forward is bumped out the way by Konate. The Liverpool centre-back continues to dominate in one-on-one defensive situations.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:40

WIDE! It is one-way traffic to start the second half. Diaz wanders forward before offloading to Jones, who cuts inside from the left of the area before whipping a right-footed attempt wide of Raya's left-hand post. This is so much better from Klopp's visitors.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:38

It looks like a tactical tweak from Klopp as Jones sits a little deeper alongside Mac Allister. The former sends a long pass down the left flank for Diaz, who has acres of space but his cross fails to find attacking team-mate Jota in the middle.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:37

CLOSE! Diaz almost makes an immediate impact in the next half, driving down the left before his right-footed effort is blocked by White. Liverpool regain possession in the middle before Mac Allister rockets a long-range strike just wide to Raya's right when aiming for the top corner.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:23

Amazingly, Liverpool are level in this Premier League clash despite not having a shot on target yet. Arsenal have accumulated 1.94 expected goals (xG) to the Reds' 0.1, yet somehow these two sides cannot be separated at the interval. Arteta needs his side to find a clinical edge in the next period, while Klopp's men must still respond after a woeful first-half performance that was only salvaged by Arsenal's defensive error.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:22

Arteta's men appear dejected as the half-time whistle sounds with Arsenal and Liverpool level at 1-1 heading into the break. Saka fired the hosts into the lead after 14 minutes, capitalising on a rebound from Havertz's shot that was saved by Alisson. The Gunners remained in control for the rest of the first half, only for Saliba and Raya to make a mess on the stroke of half-time as Diaz poked against Gabriel, whose own goal dragged the Reds back into this contest.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:18

Jorginho slides a deft pass into the feet of Martinelli, who fails to pull the trigger inside the Liverpool area. The Arsenal winger just could not sort his feet out to test Alisson.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:18

An entertaining first half is almost coming to an end as fourth official Pawson indicates a minimum of three additional minutes. Klopp's half-time message will be an interesting one at this rate.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:16

Diaz catches the ankle of White with a late challenge, with the Arsenal right-back making the most of the foul. Referee Taylor is quick to blow his whistle, but no further punishment follows for the Colombia winger.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:15

Gabriel angles a well-weighted pass for Martinelli but the Brazil winger is eased out the way by the industrious Konate. Havertz is then deemed to have fouled Mac Allister near the halfway line, perhaps fortunate to escape a caution for his sliding tackle.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:13

Liverpool have won their last four Premier League away games, scoring 10 goals and conceding just one. It’s just one fewer win than they had in their previous 15 on the road in the league (W5 D7 L3). However, the Reds look out of ideas in north London at the moment.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:10

SAVE! Odegaard and Rice work a short free-kick routine before the ball falls kindly for Gabriel. The Arsenal centre-back has space on the edge of the area but his low left-footed curled attempt is held by Alisson, who gets down well to his right.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:08

Martinelli has more goal contributions against Liverpool in all competitions than he has against any other opponent for Arsenal (four goals, two assists). The Brazilian netted the opener after just 58 seconds in this exact fixture last season, also assisting Saka’s goal to give the Gunners a 2-1 lead heading into half-time. Alexander-Arnold has struggled to cope with him so far here, too.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:06

Jorginho goes down and needs a moment to catch his breath after a foul from Gravenberch and Jota. The former Chelsea midfielder is fine to continue, though, despite what looked like an uncomfortable collision.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:04

There's a slight delay as referee Taylor drops something in the middle of the pitch before going over to fourth official Craig Pawson. The pair discuss with one another as Pawson attempts to help Taylor with his equipment, seemingly changing his watch. Bizarre!

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:03

White makes the most of Mac Allister's nudge and wins a free-kick near the right-hand touchline. The Arsenal right-back is deemed to take too long over restarting play, though, and is cautioned by referee Taylor.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:00

Gomez's searching diagonal finds Alexander-Arnold, whose cross is blocked behind by Zinchenko. The Liverpool right-back delivers the right-sided corner towards the penalty spot but Van Dijk loops a poor header well over the target.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

17:00

Alexander-Arnold's right-wing cross has Gakpo interested before Gabriel prods back to Raya. Arsenal are on top, make no mistake about it, but the Gunners must be wary of the Liverpool threat down either flank.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:58

Gomez could be in for a long game now, already on a caution and up against the impressive Saka. Odegaard is leading the press for Arsenal, too, and dragging numerous Liverpool defenders all around as Klopp's men fail to figure how to cope at the Emirates so far.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:56

Mac Allister is dispossessed again by Rice before Havertz breaks over the halfway line. Gomez needlessly tugs back on the Arsenal forward, conceding a free-kick before the referee cautions the Liverpool full-back.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:55

Mac Allister loses possession in the middle but his error goes unpunished as Saka's aimless chip is collected by Gravenberch, who then wins a free-kick from Odegaard.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:52

GREAT BLOCK! Alexander-Arnold makes a mess at the back as the Liverpool defender is hurried by Havertz. A loose ball falls for Odegaard, who takes too much time on the edge of the area before Van Dijk blocks his left-footed drive.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:51

The Reds enjoy a spell of possession but do little with it. Arsenal are sitting in a well-drilled formation, with two banks of four protecting Raya's goal. For now, it remains 1-0 to the Gunners, who would move within two points of the league-leading Liverpool.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:50

Klopp will be frustrated so far, with Liverpool appearing somewhat shocked in the face of relentless Arsenal pressure. The German head coach needs his experienced players, such as Van Dijk, to step up and calm proceedings down as the Emirates crowd continues to bounce in unison.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:47

Arsenal have won seven, drawn one and lost none when scoring the opening goal at home in the Premier League this season. Can Arteta's side continue that run and strike a hammer blow to Liverpool's title hopes here?

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:45

Goal Bukayo Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:45

WIDE! Having seen Arsenal go close at one end, Liverpool respond down the other. Mac Allister slots through for Gakpo, who breaks away from Saliba before dragging a right-footed strike just wide of the left-hand post.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:43

HUGE CHANCE! Gomez swings an inviting cross from the left-hand side but Raya claims before throwing for the onrushing Martinelli. The Arsenal winger leaves Konate in his tracks, bursting into the area before his left-footed delivery is headed wide by Saka. The England forward has to score from there but fails to make the required contact.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:41

Diaz and Gomez look to burst down the left flank but the latter is denied by a wonderful sliding tackle by Rice. The Arsenal midfielder covers so much ground, which is exactly why Arteta splashed the cash on the former West Ham man before the start of the season.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:39

Arsenal have opened the scoring in their last three Premier League games against Liverpool, doing so in the opening 10 minutes of the match each time. They last scored first in four straight league meetings with the Reds between August 1967 and November 1970 (a run of six). Can they repeat that feat here?

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:37

Arsenal players are incensed after referee Taylor points for a goal-kick, despite Alexander-Arnold twice seemingly conceding a corner on the far side. The England right-back, perhaps, got away with one there.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:37

Saka sneaks in behind after Odegaard squeezes past Van Dijk, only for the Arsenal winger to slice a right-footed cross out of play. The Gunners are finding some joy down the right-hand side so far.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:35

The atmosphere inside the Emirates is matching the occasion so far, a hugely significant clash that will have a significant impact on the title race. As for the moment, both sides continue to sound each other out.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:33

Gakpo holds up a long Van Dijk pass before Jota, as he did against Chelsea, almost bundles through towards goal. Raya is quick off his line, however, and intervenes before the Liverpool attacker can pounce.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:31

Referee Anthony Taylor gets this huge Premier League clash under way!

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:30

This will be the 200th league meeting between Arsenal and Liverpool, the fifth fixture to have been played as many times in English football history. The Reds have won 79 to the Gunners' 66 so far (D54) – how important could a win for Arteta’s side be here?

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:25

Klopp makes three changes from the midweek victory over Chelsea. Conor Bradley misses out entirely after the death of his father, as does Dominik Szoboszlai, while injury doubt Nunez is on the bench. Alexander-Arnold, Gravenberch and Gakpo are the trio to come in for Liverpool.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:20

The headline team news for Arsenal is that Gabriel Jesus misses out through injury after scoring one and assisting another against Forest. Havertz comes in to lead the line, while Smith Rowe drops to the bench for Jorginho in two Arteta changes to the hosts' lineup.

Liverpool swept aside Chelsea with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday at Anfield, maintaining their lead at the Premier League summit despite pressure from Arsenal and Manchester City. The Reds have still lost only once in the league all season, a 2-1 reverse at Tottenham back in September, with this another chance to consolidate their position in the title race and strike a blow to Arteta’s Gunners.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

16:04

Arsenal suffered from a December slump but have since responded with back-to-back Premier League victories over Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest. The latter triumph at the City Ground, a 2-1 win on Tuesday, was far less convincing than the 5-0 thrashing of the Eagles. However, Mikel Arteta’s men remain in the race for a top-flight title, trailing Liverpool by five points heading into this seismic clash.
