Around the horn: Oregon sweeps away the Red Storm with 6-0 shutout

The Oregon pitching staff didn’t want to be forgotten in the past couple of days with all of the runs that were being scored.

Tommy Brandenberg dominated for five innings and he was supported by Josiah Cromwick’s three-run homer in the second as the Ducks completed the four-game sweep of St. John’s 6-0.

Josh Kasevich added a two-run single in the fifth and Jacob Walsh belted his second homer on the season in the seventh.

Oregon won its fifth straight game, but the schedule will get tougher this coming weekend with UC-Santa Barbara coming to PK Park for a four-game series that includes a doubleheader on Saturday.

Final Score: Oregon 6, St. John's 0

Keys to the game

  • Josiah Cromwick keeps vying for playing time as he connected for his second home run of the season, this time being a three-run shot to left to give the Ducks an early 3-0 lead.

  • Tommy Brandenberg walked two batters in the third but then coaxed St. John’s into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. It wouldn’t be the last time Oregon turned two to end a threat.

  • The Ducks saw the Red Storm get one runner on in the fifth, but Brandenberg was helped out by his defense when Jermaine White lined out to second and Gavin Smith doubled up the runner off of first base.

  • Josh Kasevich extended Oregon’s lead in the fifth with a two-run single that scored Brennan Milone and Jacob Walsh.

  • Speaking of Walsh, the big true freshman first baseman belted his second homer of the season to end the scoring for the day.

St. John’s was very much in the game despite having two possible scoring chances erased with double plays. Kasevich’s two-run single to left gave the Ducks a 5-0 lead and the home team cruised from there.
