Area Roundup: Miller leads Oak Hills to CIF-SS Div. 3AA semis with a 40-point performance against Norco
Michael Miller had the game of his life Friday night in the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs.
The senior point guard dropped 40 points on the night but more importantly, led a late fourth-quarter run to lead the Oak Hills boys basketball team past Norco 71-69.
The Bulldogs took an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter. Norco chipped away and led by four points with just under a minute to play.
Miller quickly struck, driving the lane and cutting Norco’s lead to 69-67.
The Bulldogs applied full-court pressure and Miller came up with a steal.
He promptly tied the game by sinking two free throws with about 31 seconds left.
Norco was unable to get a shot off on the following possession and Isaiah Sharky stole the ball away with 11 seconds left to play.
Miller drove to the basket again and drew a foul with less than two seconds on the clock.
Both free throws were good, sealing Oak Hills’ ticket to the semifinals Tuesday night against Rancho Cucamonga, which topped Paraclete 71-57 on Friday night.
Miller also snagged six rebounds and dished four assists, while his teammate Semaj Blocker logged a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.

Oak Hills 6, Ontario Christian 3
At Oak Hills, the Bulldogs improved to 2-1 as Juan Martinez drove in two runs.
Devin Diaz allowed one run on three hits over five innings on the mound, and Josiah Salazar went 1 for 1 with two runs.
Oak Hills is back in action Monday against Summit.
Riverside Prep 10, Little Rock 3
At Littlerock, the Silver Knights improved to 2-1 on the season with a road victory Friday afternoon. Cayman Pluma picked up the victory on the mound with three innings of work with five strikeouts and one earned run.
Isaiah Gomez collected two hits and two RBI, Gage Leighton went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Drew Heard went 1 for 2 with two RBI.
Riverside Prep is back in action Tuesday at Palmdale.
PREP BOYS SOCCER
Valley View 2, Hesperia 1
At Moreno Valley, the Scorpions lost a heartbreaker to the No. 1 seed in Division 3 on Friday night and were a few minutes shy of sending another game into penalty kicks.
Hesperia did all it could, playing with 10 players most of the game, but allowed a goal as the second overtime period came to an end, breaking a 1-1 tie in the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Div. 3 playoffs.
“Today's game really showed the urgency my boys had and the power of never letting up to be defeated. We had them,” Hesperia head coach Luis Luviano said. “But unfortunately that's the life of soccer, we just talked after the game and I praised them for their hard work.”
Hesperia returned to the playoffs following a disappointing 2020-21 season, where the team ended fourth place in the Mojave River League standings.
The Scorpions claimed the league title this year just before their playoff run.
“I want to congratulate my boys and coaches for this incredible season,” said Luviano. “Being in a higher division really sets the tone for us for next season. We accomplished a lot this year. Went through ups and downs, however we managed to do all of that as a team.
“Valley View was a good team. But we were better. They can have it this season, because we're coming back next year with a vengeance.”
Temple City 2, Adelanto 1
At Adelanto, the Saints got off to a flat start and couldn’t recover in the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 playoffs.
Two two goals, Damian Espinoza scored Adelanto’s lone goal in the closing minutes of the game.
The Saints end their season with a 10-6-7 overall record
Fairmont Prep 2, AAE 0
At Apple Valley, the Knights’ season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 7 quarterfinals.
AAE ends the season with a 7-10-2 overall record.
PREP SOFTBALL
Oak Hills 7, Barstow 3
At Barstow, Holly Medina collected four hits, including a triple, Thursday afternoon to lead the Bulldogs past the Aztecs in the season opener.
Malyna Retemal and Natalie Picado both 2 for 4, and Carly Baze struck out six hitters over three shutout innings in the circle. Baze also hit a triple.
For Barstow, Paige Siembab went 2 for 3 and Lauren Franco went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Oak Hills is back in action Monday against Etiwanda.

At Hesperia, the Cougars kicked off the season with a tiebreaker-victory over the Sultans on Thursday.
Eric Poindexter swept with three bagels to lead Granite Hills’ singles.
The Cougars (1-0) host Apple Valley on Tuesday.
