AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Holliday dominates Eastland in postseason opener
Holliday made it look easy.
The Eagles (10-1) scored in all three phases – in the first four minutes no less – and essentially ended their Region II-3A Division II bi-district matchup with Eastland (3-8) before it ever really got started in a 44-7 rout.
Holliday advances to play Leonard in the area round at 7 p.m. Friday in Weatherford.
“We talked to the kids all week about the importance of starting hot,” Holliday coach Kyle Atwood said. “When Eastland stuck around with people, they won some games. They’re a 3-7 team, but they’re better than the record shows. Teams that got up on them early, they struggled to make a comeback.”
From Jaiden Kim’s 80-yd kickoff return for a touchdown to open the contest to Vaughn Hamill’s scoop and score to Ashtyn Berry’s 70-yd TD reception, Holliday connected on big play after big play to race out to a 35-0 lead with 9:38 to play in the second quarter.

“I caught the ball and started up the field and the hole came wide open,” Kim said. “I took off trying not to get caught. This is a great win for us. We really worked together as a team and came out fired up in the first half. We kept it going the whole game.”
For all the fireworks Holliday provided en route to a 44-7 halftime lead, the Eagles struggled to maintain drives after the intermission despite the starters playing the entirety of the contest.
“We’ve talked at halftime the last two weeks about the importance of coming out and playing well in the second half and we didn’t do that again tonight,” Atwood said. “Some of it is a testament to Eastland, but we’ve got to come out and be able to execute a little better in the second half.”
Holliday secured its seventh-straight 10-win season in the rout of the Mavericks dating back to 2017 while Atwood earned the first 10-win season of his head coaching career.
“It’s a testament to coach (Frank) Johnson and the program that he ran but it also speaks to the community and the expectation the school district has,” Atwood added. “It’s amazing to be a part of something where the expectation is to go out there and play as hard as you possibly can and win. They have a winners’ mentality. It doesn’t matter if it’s academics, marching band, basketball, football or ping pong, our kids expect to win. They play hard and represent us well. It’s really amazing to be a part of this.”
