According to an SI report, the Cleveland Browns are willing to take on half of Baker Mayfield’s salary
We have more info on the future of former Oklahoma Sooners QB Baker Mayfield.
In a previous article, I said that the Cleveland Browns didn’t want to pay any of Baker Mayfield’s salary.
In April, that was true, and the main reason why Baker wasn’t moved before the NFL Draft. However, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Browns are willing to eat more than half of Mayfield’s salary.
Breer says that the Browns are willing to keep “$9, $10 million” of Mayfield’s deal and he doesn’t think that the Browns are holding on to him as insurance for a Deshaun Watson suspension.

Breer also said that the Panthers would only make the trade is its a bargain for them. Whatever the Browns are willing to eat, it might not be enough to ship Mayfield off to the Panthers.
The Panthers are looking at a Sam Darnold-Matt Corral tandem at QB for the 2022 season, and needless to say that doesn’t inspire a huge amount of confidence.
Matt Rhule was brought to Carolina as the next big thing, and if he can’t make something happen in year three, he might be looking for a new job after this season.
The Browns need to just bite the bullet and pay whatever amount it takes to make a trade happen. This situation has gone on far too long and needs to end.
There is one thing I don’t quite understand:
Where are the Seattle Seahawks in all of this?
Ever since the days leading up to the draft, the Panthers have been the only ones actively trying to acquire Mayfield, and the Seahawks have been all too quiet.
Carolina’s QB situation isn’t great, but it’s better than having Drew Lock and Geno Smith.
So the Browns are appearing to be a little more reasonable as training camp gets ever closer. Will they do what needs to happen to get a deal done?
