49ers expected to sign C Alex Mack

Just an hour after news broke on Trent Williams’ massive contract, the San Francisco 49ers were linked to another offensive lineman in the middle of the night. This time, veteran center Alex Mack is the target, once again in his career joining head coach Kyle Shanahan. The pair has been together in Cleveland and Atlanta prior to their reunification in San Francisco.

Mack, who will turn 35 in November, played his college ball at Cal, and has earned five Pro Bowl trips in his career, the most recent coming in 2018. Touchdown Wire recently listed Mack among the most underrated offensive free agents of this season:

For virtually his entire NFL career Alex Mack has been listed among the game’s top centers, and it is likely that the final stop of his NFL journey is in Canton. After starting his career with the Cleveland Browns Mack has spent each of the past five season with the Atlanta Falcons, and was a critical component of their offense when the Falcons made the run to Super Bowl LI.

Terms of the deal were not announced, and the signing cannot officially take place until the new league year begins at 1 p.m. PT.
