49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo says he's 'good to go, finally' after ACL tear
When the San Francisco 49ers gather for training camp on July 26, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will have the green light to take part in all activities.
The 27-year-old is coming off a torn left ACL suffered last Sept. 23 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
‘I’m good to go. Finally’
Speaking with Pro Football Talk on Tuesday, Garoppolo said he won’t have any restrictions.
“I’m good to go. Finally,” he said.
Garoppolo, whom the Niners acquired via trade with the New England Patriots in October 2017, has started just eight games thus far for San Francisco, but in that brief time he’s given fans hope.
He says he’s feeling good.
“I really do. The rehab process has gone really well. Knock on wood,” he said. “We haven’t had any setbacks. OTAs went about as well as I could have hoped for and now for training camp hopefully we’ll be full go with team drills and all that stuff. We’re moving in the right direction. We’ve just got to keep going day by day and keep stacking them together. It’s a long process, but we’ve come this far, so why stop now, right?”
Working with Tom House
Garoppolo has been working with throwing coach Tom House, who also works with his former teammate Tom Brady and others, and has also gotten together with his 49ers receivers.
With House, Garoppolo is working on game situation-type drills, but also just on basics and mechanics.
“That’s what quarterbacking comes down to,” Garoppolo said. “You have to be really good with the basics and do them over and over again. It’s good to get someone with as much experience as Tom.
“It’s nice to have him see you throw and see if he has any little things to fix up or anything you haven’t thought about that he thinks can help you. Quarterback is a very unique position and a lot goes into it. There are a lot of moving pieces.”
Garoppolo is also teaming with retailer Men’s Warehouse for their annual Suit Drive, which collects gently used professional attire for men and women re-entering the work force.
The Illinois native was able to tie the effort back to football.
“It allows men and women to make a good first impression,” Garoppolo said. “I think it applies to the whole football mindset of ‘look good, feel good, play good.’”
