Here are 37 Washington County high school girls to watch in 2023-24 winter sports

The Washington County high school winter sports season soon will be in full swing with basketball, indoor track and field and wrestling. Here are 37 girls to watch:

Callie Alkire

Clear Spring basketball

Alkire, a senior forward, averaged 9.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season.

Amelia Beck-Schmieder

Smithsburg indoor track & field

Beck-Schmieder, a senior, was the county runner-up in the 55 hurdles last winter.

Danica Bennett

St. Maria Goretti basketball

Bennett, a junior forward, averaged 14.1 points, 10.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game last season.

Anna Chamberlin

North Hagerstown indoor track & field

Chamberlin, a sophomore who played basketball last winter, placed third at the county cross country championships this fall.

Morgan Cook

Boonsboro wrestling

Cook, a junior, went 13-7 last season at 110 pounds, including 2-2 in the girls state tournament, after placing third in 2A-1A West and first in the inaugural girls county tourney.

Kilah Dandridge

St. Maria Goretti basketball

Dandridge, a junior guard, averaged 15.2 points, 5.5 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game last season for Spring Mills, earning West Virginia Class AAAA all-state first-team honors.

Boonsboro indoor track & Field

Dillow, a sophomore, placed fourth in the 55 and fifth in the 300 at the county championships last winter.

Abby Drier

Broadfording basketball

Drier, a senior forward, averaged 5.2 points, 10.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game last season.

Grace Ellis

Smithsburg indoor track & field

Ellis, a junior, was named The Herald-Mail’s girls indoor track athlete of the year last winter after leading the Leopards to the 1A team title at states, where she placed first in the 500, second in the 800, third in the 4x400 and fifth in the 300.

Fisher, a junior, earned 1A state gold in the 4x800 relay both indoors and outdoors last school year.

Gentzel, a junior, won the 1A state title in cross country this fall. At last winter’s indoor state meet, she placed second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600.

Michaela Gross

Gross, a senior, was the 1A state runner-up in cross country this fall. She placed third at states in the 3,200 last winter.

Dana Hammond

Clear Spring indoor track & field

Hammond, a senior, placed first in the county, third in the 1A West region and fourth at states in the high jump last winter.

Haylee Hartman

Hartman, a senior forward, averaged 10.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season.

Kayla Hawbecker

Smithsburg indoor track & field

Hawbecker, a junior, earned 1A gold in the 4x800, bronze in the 800 and a fourth-place finish in 1,600 at states last winter.

Jodiy Kay Hibbert

North Hagerstown indoor track & field

Hibbert, a junior, placed third in the 300 and fifth in the 55 at the county championships last winter.

Jenna Howe

Smithsburg indoor track & field

Howe, a junior, earned 1A gold in the 4x200, bronze in the 300 and a fifth-place finish in 55 at states last winter.

Rian Johnson

North Hagerstown indoor track & field

Johnson, a junior, placed second in the 1,600 and third in the 800 at the county championships last winter.

Joyal, a junior, is the reigning county champion in the 55 hurdles.

King, a junior, placed in four events at the 1A state meet last winter, first in the 4x200 and 4x800, third in the 4x400 and fifth in the 500.

Koontz, a senior guard, averaged 7.0 points, 3.5 steals and 3.4 rebounds per game last season.

Skyla Mastronardi

Mastronardi, a sophomore guard, averaged 13.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 2.8 assists per game last season.

McCauley, a junior, placed third in the county and fourth at the 1A state meet in the shot put last winter.

Mikus, a senior, dominated in the girls postseason tourneys last winter, capturing state, region and county titles at 135 pounds to finish with a 15-1 record.

Adriana Moss

Moss, a junior, was the 2A-1A West girls champ at 140 pounds last season and finished with a 7-5 record.

Alaina Pate

Pate, a junior, won a 1A state title in the 4x200 and placed third in the county in the 55 last winter.

Grace Reynolds

South Hagerstown wrestling

Reynolds, a junior, was the runner-up in the 4A-3A West region girls tournament at 110 pounds last season.

Ana Small-Simmons

South Hagerstown indoor track & field

Small-Simmons, a senior, placed fifth in the county in the shot put and was a 3A state qualifier in the high jump last winter.

Emma Smith

Grace basketball

Smith — a senior forward who is still recovering from an injury that sidelined her during the volleyball season — averaged 11.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game for the MDCC regular-season champions last year.

Skylar Smith

Hancock basketball

Smith, a senior forward, averaged 8.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per game last season.

Alexandria Spithaler

Smithsburg indoor track & field

Spithaler, a junior, placed third in the county and fifth at the 1A state meet in the pole vault last winter.

Lauren Stine

North Hagerstown indoor track & field

Stine, a junior, won 3A state gold in the 3,200 last spring after earning state silver in the event last winter. She won CMC, county and 3A West titles in cross country this fall before placing third at states.

Riley Troxell

South Hagerstown indoor track & field

Troxell, a senior, was the county’s top performer in the pole vault last school year, both indoors (10-2) and outdoors (10-6), placing fifth in 3A at states each season.
