3 Bills free agents we are surprised haven’t re-signed yet

A large amount of the players that were on the 2022 Buffalo Bills roster that became free agents after last season have already figured out their future.

Some notable players, such as linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, have departed. Others, like safety Jordan Poyer, re-signed in Buffalo.

But there are still some that remain available and a few we’re surprised to see still there. Here are three such Bills free agents:

RB Taiwan Jones

Age: 34

Jones is no spring chicken, but he still played a large role on the Bills over the past few years.

During his second stint in Buffalo which includes the last three seasons, Jones has played in 61, 71, and 74 percent of the team’s special teams snaps, respectively. Those might not seem like big shoes to fill, but it is.

The Bills currently have three running backs on their roster (Damien Harris, James Cook, Nyheim Hines). If Buffalo does not take one at the 2023 NFL draft, Jones could be back.

Age: 31

Similar to Jones, Kumerow’s bread and butter in Buffalo has been on special teams. Despite hitting injured reserve in November for an ankle issue, he played 49 percent of the Bills’ special team snaps after hitting the 69 percent mark the year prior.

Plus, Kumerow has some pretty good chemistry with quarterback Josh Allen. It’s not often your fifth or sixth receiver gets called upon, but when he does, it’s nice to know there’s a little bit there.

The biggest might involved Trent Sherfield, who signed in free agency. Is there a world where both Kumerow and Sherfield end up on the Bills? Or is Sherfield more of a replacement? The pair are similar players.

S Dean Marlowe

Age: 30

Technically, the Bills gave up an asset for Marlowe in 2022… but it was a mere seventh-round pick so it’s not a big deal if he doesn’t come back.

Having said that, Marlowe can contribute on special teams like the others. Potentially more importantly, he knows Buffalo’s defense and is a veteran that can fill in for both Poyer and Micah Hyde. We saw just last season how much depth at safety can be tested.

Having said all that, remember Marlowe’s name post-draft. If the Bills do not add a young, long-term option to backup their starting duo, Marlowe might have his phone ring.
