2023 NFL combine: Bills had formal meeting with Tulane’s Tyjae Spears

Tulane running back Tyjae Spears is a name to keep in mind for the Buffalo Bills ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

According to The Draft Network, Spears had a formal meeting with the Bills at the recent combine:

Spears was a pivotal piece on a revived Tulane program in 2022.

In 14 games, he had 1,581 yards (6.9 average) and 21 total touchdowns. As a pass catcher, Spears notched 22 grabs for 256 yards.

The 5-foot-10 rusher does have size on him at 201 pounds but he’ll likely need to add more at the next level. According to Next Gen Stats, Spears’ combine score was second-best of any RB prospect at the event.

In Spears, the Bills would be adding a piece similar to the one they’d be replacing: Devin Singletary. The veteran is a pending free agent and we’ll learn his fate when free agency begins on March 15.

While most assume Buffalo might want to add more of a bellcow rusher to replace Singletary, that’s not a certain. The Bills opted for Singletary and James Cook in 2022 and in Spears they could roll a similar backfield out next season.

The Draft Network slates Spears as a third-round pick.
