2022 Giants training camp preview: Fullback

The New York Giants will have a new look to their offense this year under new head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.

Everyone knows about their past histories. Daboll is responsible for the ascent of Josh Allen as a star in Buffalo while Kafka gets much credit as Patrick Mahomes’ quarterback coach in Kansas City.

One thing that isn’t mentioned much is the running game. The Giants have questionable stable of running backs led by the often-injured Saquon Barkley and it is still unknown how the unit will be used.

There is also no dedicated fullback on the roster. Here is how they will likely deploy that position this year.

Tight ends

Buffalo used an H-back or a tight end in the fullback role when thy needed to under Daboll. Dawson Knox occasionally lined up in that fashion, either behind the tackle or in the backfield itself.

That means one of their tight ends — pick one (Daniel Bellinger, Ricky Seals-Jones, Jordan Akins, Chris Myarick) — could find themselves in that role this year.

The Giants signed Oklahoma tight end/fullback Jeremiah Hall, who is listed at 6-foot-2 and 248 pounds. He could certainly play either role, providing he makes the roster.

The Giants may simply go without a fullback as their depth chart indicates. But they could also slide one of their running backs into an ad hoc role.

Barkley is listed at over 230 pounds and several other backs (Gary Brightwell, Jashaun Corbin and Antonio Williams) are all over 215 pounds.
