11TH REGION GIRLS SOCCER: Central, Southern set to face familiar foes

Oct. 8—Madison Central and Madison Southern are set to face familiar foes in the opening round of the 11th Region Tournament.

The Lady Indians (12-3-1) will play host to Franklin County (8-13-0), while Madison Southern (9-5-1) hits the road to take on Lexington Catholic (21-1-1).

The other first-round match-up feature Great Crossing taking on Henry Clay and Lafayette taking on Frederick Douglass.

All four games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday.

The semifinals (Wednesday) and title game (Saturday) will be at Madison Southern.

Central reclaimed the 44th District Tournament championship with a 1-0 win over Southern last week.

The Lady Indians opened the season on Aug. 7, with a 4-0 win over Franklin County at the Gary Terry Classic in Versailles.

The teams will met again on Monday — this time in a elimination game.

The Lady Indians have won six-straight matches and have not lost since Sept. 11. During that winning streak, Central has out-scored its opponents, 27-2.

Natalie Knecht has a team-best 14 goals for the Lady Indians, while Kesley Nicholson has 11 goals. A total of 16 players have scored for Central this season.

Abby Moore and Becca Gordon have combined to allowed just 12 goals, while recording eight shutouts.

Franklin County beat Frankfort, 6-3, in the 42nd District semifinals, then was handed a 9-0 loss by Great Crossing in the championship game.

The Lady Flyers have allowed 74 goals on the season, the fourth-most of any team in the 11th Region.

In the first meeting of the season between the teams, Emily Couch had a goal and two assists, while Knecht, Julien Ross and Skylar Collingsworth also had goals.

The winner will take on either Frederick Douglass or Lafayette.

Southern and Catholic are set to meet for the fourth time in just more than a year.

The Lady Knights beat the Lady Eagles, 5-0, in the semifinals of the 2022 11th Region Tournament, then topped Southern, 3-1, last month in Berea.

The Lady Eagles have just one win in their past matches, but defeated Berea, 7-0, in the 44th District Tournament semifinals.

Senior Rebekah Christopher has a team-best 15 goals this season for Southern and also has eight assists. Carlie Hechemy has nine goals, while Sydney Hocker has eight goals.

The Lady Eagles have gotten goals from 16 different players this season.

Senior keeper Claire Cress has 119 saves, while allowing just 16 goals. She also has four shutouts.

Catholic has won four-straight 11th Region Tournament titles.

The Lady Knights will carry a 20-game winning streak into another match-up with Southern. Catholic's last loss was on Aug. 14.

The Lady Knights have out-scored their opponents 106-10 on the season and have allowed more than one goal only three times.

Catholic has four players with more than 15 goals on the season (Zara McCarthy — 26 goals, Sydney Elbert — 24 goals, Izzy Skinner — 15, Joanna Bryant — 15).

The winner moves on to face either Great Crossing or Lafayette.
