Sources: Dirk Nowitzki plans to finalize one-year, $5M deal with Mavs
In what could be Dirk Nowitzki’s final NBA season, the future Hall of Famer and the Dallas Mavericks plan to finalize a one-year, $5 million deal, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Nowitzki and the Mavericks are not in a rush to sign the contract, but Nowitzki remains a Maverick for life. The Mavericks and guard Yogi Ferrell agreed to a two-year, $5.3 million deal on Thursday, leaving the team with $5 million in salary cap space to re-sign Nowitzki.
In 20 seasons with the Mavericks, Nowitzki led the franchise to the 2011 championship, has won the league MVP and Finals MVP, and has made 13 All-Star appearances and 12 All-NBA teams. At 31,187 points, Nowitzki is currently the sixth all-time leading scorer in NBA history, behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain.
Nowitzki, 40, averaged 12 points and 5.7 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per game in 77 contests last season. He underwent minor surgery on his left ankle in April but announced he would play at least one more season.
