Tuesday Conversation: Anthony Gonzalez
Indianapolis Colts rookie wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez had two roads picked out for his post-college career. Both of them figured to feature some intense training under some intriguing circumstances. If not for the NFL, where Gonzalez was the first-round pick of the Colts this year, he had hopes of attending Stanford Law School. Gonzalez, who has impressed veteran quarterback Peyton Manning with his study habits, scored the first two touchdowns of his career on Sunday night against the Baltimore Ravens during a 44-20 win. Overall, he had six catches for 134 yards against the Ravens, helping the Colts get through life without Marvin Harrison, for now:
Cole: Manning said you work pretty hard at the game. Do you spend time on your off-day studying extra?
Gonzalez: I come in on Tuesday and get treatment (Gonzalez is nursing a sprained left thumb which he has to tape for games right now) and then I spend about an hour on my off-day watching tape. It's not a lot, but enough to get started. I'll watch the game we just played and then a little of the team coming up. I'm looking for some different things at different times. The first thing I'm trying to get ahold of is what type of team they are, what type of coverages they play. Then, as the week goes on, I look at the different personnel they have and how those guys play.

Cole: So tell me about wanting to go to law school.
Gonzalez: I'm going to do it at some point after I'm done with my career, whenever that is. Hopefully, it will be awhile. I'm not sure what exactly I want to do, but I figure that's a way to make a difference. You can't do law school for a month at a time, so it's going to have to wait.
Cole: Do you do anything right now to prepare for going to law school? Do you study for the entrance exam?
Gonzalez: Not really. That's not something you can just do. The test results are only good for four years at a time, so there's really no rush to take them now because I have no idea when I'm going to go. But I read a lot and a major part of the LSAT (law school admissions test) is reading comprehension. I'm thinking about getting an MBA and I want to learn Spanish as well once I get done playing.
Cole: What's you're grand plan with all of this?
Gonzalez: I've always thought about being a judge. I think that's a good way to make a difference. That's something my family has always talked to me about. My mom and dad said, "once you take care of your family, think about how you want to make a difference in the world." … Politics, as a whole, fascinates me. I'm not sure I want to get into that anytime soon, but it interests me.
Cole: So how else do you spend your Tuesday?
Gonzalez: I just read and watch TV. Not a lot.
Cole: What are you reading right now?
Gonzalez: I usually get suggestions from people. Right now, I'm reading a book called "Zoom", by Vijay (Vaitheeswaran). It's about fueling the car of the future, it's about hydrogen cars, electric cars, what they think is going to happen in the next few years with the oil industry going through what it's going through. I read another book called "Lone Survivor" and before that I read "The Brothers Karamazov." That was pretty intense reading, but I just try to keep my mind sharp. That's really it. Other than that, I don't have a lot going on.
